Sharing Internet between new Desktop and Laptop

  • I can get to the router configuration page from the laptop. I assumed that it had to be the Desktop because my modem is connected to that.

Problem is now that the IP address can't be renewed on the laptop after I tried to configure it to connect to the router. So I turned the router off and turned it back on. The laptop could then connect but couldn't show the router configuration page.

The modem is a Motorola SB4200 modem. I have a USB cable running from the modem to the Desktop tower unit and a patch cable supplied with the router from the router to the modem.

I was unable to connect to my router's configuration page when I had a wireless access point patched to it. Not exactly the same as your set up, but similar. The reason was because they both had the same I.P. address.

The temporary fix was to unplug the access point & then configure the router. Long term I changed the I.P. of the access point.

Is modem & router using the same IP address?

I am just looking through the 68 page pdf user guide for the SB4200. Page 10 (& 33 & 34) states 'caution do not connect USB and ethernet to the same PC'. My understanding is you ARE doing this, albeit via a wireless link and a USB connection.

I suspect your system would get confused with 2 connections to one PC. Page 34 shows how the network should be configured. Desktop with usb and all other PC's from ethernet router or all via router. What this means in your case is that you can't use the wireless network AND a USB connection. Suggest you dump the USB and configure it all as wireless.

Let us know how you get on (I assume you have the user guide for the SB4200?).
Before you buy Google Nest or British Gas Hive check out ESPproMon the Android and iOS Smartphone app that helps you build the same system from just £30.
  • The ethernet connection is in the laptop via WiFi. The Desktop doesn't have any wireless cards within it because I didn't ask for any.

The cable modem is connected to the Desktop via USB cable and connected to the router via the cable that was supplied with the router.

The laptop WiFi connection has a similar IP address to the router, but not the same.
