Open up a Dos prompt and type ipconfig, then hit enter. What does this say?

  • Couldn't ping bbc.co.uk

    From ipconfig:

    Windows IP Configuration

    Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection:

    Media State..................... : Media Disonnected

    Ethernet Adpater Wireless Network Connection

    Connection-Specific DNS Suffix :
    IP Address : ***.***.***.***
    Subnet mask : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway : ***.***.***.***

The IP address and default gateway are showing OK, I'm just protecting the laptop's identity!

Give firewall software a break. Where would we be without it?

We don't all rely on hardware firewalls.

we'd be quite well off without it if we're behind routers ;)

Anyway, I was only coming up with a resolution. And as I said a lot of the time, the problems come with Zone Alarm, Norton Firewall and Windows Firewall. I'm not saying they don't do a good job... I'm just saying they aren't usually configured correctly thus block network access or downloading data to iexplorer specifically, the latter being a known zone alarm interference.

If it is not firewall related fair enough, but i think he mentioned that he disabled all firewalls but on his second point he mentioned that he is not sure if he needs to stick in the IP for access in Zone Alarm.

I got the impression that he disbaled the firewalls except zone alarm from that.

If it isn't firewall related fine, but I'm just saying, generally, software firewalls behind a router will not stop hackers getting in as the router will do that for you.

Yes it makes a difference outbound as rex and wolf have argued with me, but to be quite honest, if your that security tight then your more cautious than the average user anyway! In other words, the average user doesn't need it! There are no nasty trojans etc that are going to be sending outbound credit card info etc which isn't picked up by anti virus!!!!

Find me a case of that and i'll eat my words.

Until then, please don't argue with me like i'm an idiot. I do know what i'm talking about :(

    Thank you.

when you say "ok" are they is the default gateway 192.168.0.1 or similar, and equally is the ip address 192.168.0.2 or similar (3 or 4 maybe).

Did you disabled zone alarm with all other firewalls at the time of testing.? Are they still disabled now?

    Thanks

  • The only other idea I have is if it is a dns problem.

Try pinging 212.58.224.125 (the ip for bbc.co.uk) and see what comes up.

  • They were similar, yes. Zone Alarm on the Desktop was running, but no firewall was running on the laptop.

  • Has to be something interfering between the laptop and the router.

You 100% Windows firewall isn't running in the backgruond as well as norton?

  • Slimeball,

    What ISP are you using?

    Others,

How do ISP's restrict access from a single PC's?

This is basically telling you that you have a configuration problem. I had a quick look around and found a couple of possible solutions to this problem.

    Go IE/tools/internet options/connections/lan settings/uncheck all boxes.
Go to network places and right click on local area connection and click on repair. System should reassign lan and and connect IE.
Using the cmd ipconfig/renew will work and the "media disconnected" message will have disappeared.
You may have to disconnect power to modem to allow it to reset the IP address.

    or

This may work if you know your MAC number.
Go to Device Manager in XP In the laptop, Click Start > right click My Computer > left click properties > Hardware tab > Device manager > Network adapters > right click the wireless adapter > Properties > Locally administered MAC address Change it from none to the 12 digit number - (if you know what this number is) apply it (ok)

I hope one of these suggestions work for you. Networks can be a right pain to set up, and a joy when they're working fine.
