It depends where you want the ads. I have mine in the right or left hand columns.
I use a theme that supports widgets and ad a text box widget to the column and place the google code in that.0 -

You don't need to know anything about it to add google ads. CSS is only for the way your site looks, not what is on it.
If you want to change the way your blog looks there are loads of free themes you can get. Them main thing is to choose one that supports widgets.0 -

OK, I'm assuming your blog theme supports widgets, and you have at least two columns on your blog. And that you want the skyscraper adds in one of the columns.
In your blog dashboard click on presentation. You should see the word "Widgets" on the line below the main line. Click this word.
On the that page you should see at least one column. One column if you have a two column blog and two columns if you have a three column blog.
Below these columns you should see your widgets box, headed "available Widgets". In this box there will be little boxes with titles like "Calendar" "Meta" "Recent Comments" etc.
Drag the "Text1" box onto your column, where you want the google ads. The box will xpand to fill the width of the column. Click the icon on the right of Text1 and it will pop up.
Paste your google ad code in the big box, and you can type a title in the title box if you want. Click the cross in the top right corner of the pop up to close it. Now click the "Save Changes" button and you're done.
If you want google ads in any other place but one of your columns you'll have to tell me where and what google ads.
If you don't see the Widget option in your Presentation Menu then your theme doesn't support widgets and you will need a new one.
Hope this helps0 -

That's odd, can you post the name, or a link to the theme you are using?
Try posting the code into a post and see if the ads appear. You can delete it afterwards.
Just a thought, what do you mean by disappearing? Once you click the cross to close the box you won't see the code, but it should still be there if you open the box again.
Also the box must be a text box, it should be called TextX where X is a number.0 -
How much does google ads pay, is it even worth mucking around with it.
Im thinking I might have to start a HOW to BLOG thread, as this is going a bit off topic. Up your Imcome folks, is the name of the game.0
