Christ that is a bit rich when we are encouraged to use the Maps of Europe and take the Sat Nav devices abroad and then you tell us that yours was confiscated and you had to pay a fine! now you know why I would not venture into France

Kenwood... It's not true that Sat Nav is illegal in France - it's just the radar speed camera detectors that are illegal!

Sat Nav is well established in France and even has thriving communities in its own GPS forums which are rather like this one. Take this post from a forum on the Garmin France website...

    "French Instructions
Hello, I am sorry to open a new message on this subject, but no-one has replied to me: I have already sent mail to anyone who might let me how to get French instructions and I have sent a PM to a moderator and I've still not had a response. Despairing of ever being able to correctly use all the functions on my colour-screen Garmin etrex, I am launching this appeal for help to enable me to find French instructions for the GPS.

Thank you to those who have been interested in my problem.

    yann"

The French... don't you just love 'em? They can make even the most mundane subject sound sophisticated, don't you think? As for speaker 2...well, he just sounds like a plank, doesn't he? :o

    Allons-y!
  • Does this look like a good deal?
maybe, but only if you already have a PDA since those are bits to add to a PDA to give it sat nav capabilities, PDA= £200 so give a total of nearly £400 squid

Never ever bothered with them as I know how to read a map, its just another toy to chuck money at.

And I plan my trips before heading off. Now thats the cheapest way I know.

I bought a Sat Nav about 2 years ago. My wife does not like to drive and she can't map read. I bought it to relieve the tension when going anywhere new. The day after purchase we went to France on holiday. After the initial moaning about "the cost and gadgetry" she and I both realised how much easier life in the car had become. I bought a Garmin Street Pilot 2620 which was expensive then (about £1000) and TomToms etc were not available at that time I believe. As far as the wife and I are concerned , it was worth every penny

  • Don't know if this helps anyone, but a friend recently purchased the Tomtom Software (version 5) for his Nokia 6680 mobile phone from someone on ebay at a cost of only £30.00 plus recorded delivery. he then found someoneelse on ebay to supply the TomTom GPS receiver and got that for £99.00 plus recorded delivery.

Possibly a cheaper option for some since you don't need to buy a whole new piece of kit...just use the same piece of kit you take everywhere with you already - your mobile or your PDA or both.

I upgraded my phone to an Orange SPV M2000 on contract with orange, this cost me £0 and then bought a 16 channel reciever from ebay for £50.

You will also have to buy an sd card for the phone, but they are around £30 on https://www.ebuyer.com for a 512MB maybe even cheaper.

This just leaves you to buy the tomtom software, again try ebay as there are some good deals on there.
  • I use my laptop with Navigator software from directions, with a GPS receiver bought for £10 on Ebay - I could have bought the bundle here http://www.directions.ltd.uk/moreinfo.php?id=3120 for 89.99. I have the european version - which was great on a recent touring holiday. The only downside is that you have to have a laptop with an in-car charger - but I had that anyway.
  • Hi all,
https://www.navman.co.uk has got some ICN510 (think that's right) factory reconditionsed units for £299.
REally not sure which one is the best to go for - any recommendations?

Would you mind revealing what the average monthly spend has to be to get the M2000 as an upgrade on Orange? Did you come out with the usual threatening to leave lines? What you've done seems like the best option for me providing i can get the upgrade for nothing. Am due to upgrade but my bills are around the £40 mark. Am thinking whether thats enough to be given a £200 piece of kit for nothing.
