Not sure if this one has been mentioned, but garmin are doing a new one with Major Roads of Europe on , Full postcode and can run on AA batteries for £199.99

Not able to use vouchers on them, but still a good price for a full sat nav. Not had a play with one yet, but seems pretty good for a no frills model

  • If you really want to go to town, we bought a Garmin Streetpilot on special offer from Maplin. They were reduced to £699, but they had 1 or 2 which were returns (same guarantee) with an extra £100 off. So we got a Streetpilot for £599!!!!! :T :T

VERY important for us - my husband has NO sense of direction. I mean really NO sense - he has MS and seems to have lost that part of his brain (although most other bits work OK except for the bit that tells him to tidy up and do the washing up ;) ). He can barely find his way into the local town, and he's lived here for 2.5 years. Now, suddenly, he's able to drive the cat to the vets, go shopping........just THINK of all the jobs I can find for him to do!
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).
  • Just to throw another shrimp on the Barbie!

Am interested in buying a sat nav....i really need to be able to use my mobile with it though (bluetooth)?

Am considering a TomTom Go 5

anybody anything further to add to this?

    regards

    Pete
  • not quite the cheapest, but cheaper than some earlier posts

    Acer Sat Nav £230 + p+p

Seems to include most everything you need, apart from a car cradle
  • Lots of useful stuff here, but not quite what I'm after - in fact I'm not sure my ideal device actually exists!

What I need is the usual features for in-car use, talking you to a destination, but also a device that I can take out of the car with me when I'm walking in the country. I'd expect to change the map data to the two and a half inch OS maps (presumably a different card or something) but it would be able to show the route I was taking on the map.

Does anything like that exist? Probably haven't explained it very well - please say if not clear!

    Many thanks

Maplin are offering pre-orders for the Garmin StreetPilot i3 for £199 delivered. This is a self-contained unit with GPS receiver and screen, similar to TomTom's Go, so you don't need a PDA to go with it.

If you sign up to Maplin's newsletter you will be emailed vouchers for £10 off £100 and £30 off £300 which you could use to further reduce the cost.

The user interface is operated by a scroll wheel rather than a touch screen. It's very small but it does have a colour screen and 3-D moving map display. It has full UK postcode support. As far as I know it doesn't have the speed camera databases that you can get for other systems.

This does look good - does it have the ability to ID speed cameras, does anyone know? I know you can download a speedcamera database - will that work on this?
  • AFAIK, you can download the poi database from http://www.pocketgps.co.uk and upload it the i3

I'm basing this knowledge on the fact that there is a the following on the garmin website for the i3:

    StreetPilot i3 Updates & Downloads

    * Additional Software
o POI Loader Ver. 2.0 as of July 29, 2005 Download

Mine should be here tommorow so I'll try and take a proper look over the w/e.
