john, the same Dixons I bought the Kerrio for Palm off had a Tom Tom Navigator 3 kit for Pocket PC for under £50. Consisted of Tom Tom 3 software, docking cradle/charger and wired GPS "mouse".

I suspect it was designed for the iPAQ but no idea of which specific models. Might be worth checking your local Dixons stores for old stock as IMHO this would be about the cheapest way of adding Sat Nav to an iPAQ without buying a GPS receiver from HongKong on eBay and using illegitamate software.

Also AFAIK there may be a cheap upgrade path to TomTom5.

    HTH - Rufus.
  • I bought the Palm Zire 72, with seperate bluetooth GPS receiver, plus car kit for £200 from John Lewis. They have taken them off the website, however I got mine in store. It comes with UK maps on a 128meg card.

Came with a 2 year guarantee as well

re the £199 one on the first page, if it doesn't have a touchscreen it can be REALLY hard to use.

There is a new Sony one out which the gadget magazine T3 panned (2 stars) for not having a touchscreen. Can you imagine typing in a city, town and street address using a scroll wheel?

That's right! If you can get a sealed genuine copy of TomTom Navigator 3 that's never been activated then you can upgrade to TomTom Navigator 5 (using the unique product code) for just €59.00 plus P&P (another €9.95). The upgrade not only gets you the newer version and newer map data but you get the full Maps of Western Europe for free.

See this TomTom web page for more information:

Free satnav on selected mobile phones with T-mobile. So if you were already in the market for a new phone, you may want to check-out the Co-Pilot offers on T-mobile.

Personally I would stay well clear of any device that doesn't include traffic information. To me the traffic info makes it really worthwhile as although one will know the most common journeys, one will always hear the traffic announcement just too late on the radio just when you pass that exit....

I used to have Navigon with TMC on my Medion PDA, but now I have moved to TomTom 5 Mobile on my Nokia 6680 mobile phone (less devices in the car). We got built in full widescreen SatNav with TMC in my wifes Murano (is standard) and I must admit that the little screen of my phone is just as good....
  • Gizmondo (https://www.gizmondo.com) has just announced its GPS software release. By the end of September it will sell a unit with UK maps for £199 (can be upgraded to whole of Europe for more). The GPS software is made by CoPilot. As gizmondo does so much else as well (like games for the kids, movies, music and camera), the price is especially good I feel. Not a PSP beater on games etc but holds its own.
  • With regard to the use of sat.Nav. devices "especially ones with Radar sensors"DONT use them in France, cos if you are caught with one in your car that has a radar sensor, even if you aint using it or its in the boot , IT WILL be confiscated and you get quite a nasty shock for the immediate fine you will have to pay. I Know I lost mine !!!!
  • Just to throw my two penneth worth in!

Have been using Tom Tom for the last two and a half years. Started with Tom Tom 2, upgraded to 3 and now 5.

Use with an Ipaq 5400 PDA. GPS is provided through Road Angel speed camera detector.

Have used the 30 day trial of the Speed Camera locator on Tom Tom, to compare against Road Angel. Tom Tom is nowhere near as effective - less than 5% of gatso/specs/truvelo cameras are on their database. There is no way I would depend on that!

However, Tom Tom itself is superb, I really could not live without it. I drive around 40,000 miles per year all around the UK and Europe. Just returned from Holland and Belgium, and used it there. Invaluable.

Personally, I feel that Tom Tom have carved them selves a niche in this market, and each upgrade gets better and better. Each time I have upgraded it has cost around €60 - and has been money well spent.

In addition to trying the speed camera locator (as above) I have just had a month's trial of the Traffic facility. I am not convinced it is worth while, it is certainly not infallible. Not sure of the cost implications yet either as this facility uses GPRS download from a mobile phone, and have not had a bill yet to see the cost. Tom Tom reackon a couple of MB used twice a day for a 40 minute journey - but I do far more miles and want to see the exact cost.

Anyway, notwithstanding any of the above, Tom Tom is a superb bit of kit, now in its 5th incarnation it has ironed out a lot of the niggles, is quite easy to use once set up and you have the hang of it. However one vital point to make is their customer service is diabolical. Impossible to get through on an 0870 (or 0845 forget which). I call their head office in Netherlands using 18866.com for 2p per minute!!

Don't know if this is any use to anybody!

I managed to pick up a Kirrio SatNav system for the Palm Tungsten E for under a tenner at my local Dixons near Victoria (they were having a stockroom clear out):

    http://www.dixons.co.uk/product.php?sku=859022

Comes with GPS mouse, car holder with 3 ways of connecting, ciggy charger, software and UK maps (though early 2004) etc.

All I need now is a Tungsten E - Argos are selling for £75, so a full Sat Nav for under £85 by my reconing!

    Rufus.

From Mikeyc, just an idea but people are selling the PALMONE TUNGSTEN E on eBay, but normally they only have 32mb but the software will require 256. Some guy even had one at £2.50 as it doesn't hold charge, might just need a new battery, or just buy the cigar power lead.
