Latest update of another couple of video clips http://www.bird-cam.co.uk/news/update

With the chicks growing more and more its getting harder to find a video which shows them all together!

As you can see all 7 chicks seems healthy and are growing fast!

The chicks are developing feathers, especially on their wings and it's getting to be a snug fit in there!
  • After a day where the bird-cam server died I've spent 6 hours brining it all back to life!

All 7 chicks look like they are developing well, eyes are open and feathers are forming too!

There seems to be quite a range of sizes and I am hopeful that they will start to fledge very shortly!

We've had bird tits nesting in our rather overgrown ivy on the shed roof.........couple of weeks ago it looked like the parents were flitting about quick as they could for food -but its all quiet now and we haven't seen them.........why would this be ? Would the chicks have already flown ?
Haven't seen any 'bodies' around that might have fallen from the next and don't like to disturb that part of the ivy in case they're still there.
I'm going to have a look at springwatch on the tele tonight -that might give an idea but any info I'm grateful for.

On average chicks leave the nest between 15-23 days after hatching.

If you click on the link below then you might find some helpful information about the blue tit's life cycle including how they nest and how the chicks develop.

Hope this helps a little, if you check out the live feed you will see the chicks in their nest live.

Interesting article - thanks for that link.

We've had bird boxes right at the bottom of the garden for a few years now but its been hard to know if blue tits have used them. We've always had loads about in the garden so I just assumed they had.
Never had any nest in the ivy before though.......it was fascinating to see the birds flitting about then diving back into the ivy...........maybe ours have fled the nest ? There's been no sign of bodies or eggshells on the path. Dont suppose we'll know until we probe a bit further later in the year. Hopefully our little family have fled the nest.

Look at the size that the chicks are up to now, they are almost ready to leave.

There are appear to be six currently in the nest as we think one has already fledged and left the nest.

Well after a very upsetting 2008 when all of the chicks died I am pleased to report that in 2009 all of the chicks have fledged.

We spent this afternoon watching as each chick fledged and left the nest. Each of the chicks would come to the mouth of the bird box and where calling their parents. The lack of response back seemed to be the push that the chicks needed to fledge the nest. The first few chicks took about an hour each but as the numbers dropped then they became quicker and quicker.

I managed to setup my video camera just in time to capture the last chick leaving the nest. So long blue tits, we hope you live long and prosper.
