Broadband speed

I have been with virgin for my broadband for 5 yrs. I have been paying for up to 8mbs but only been on the up to 2mbs package. After many phone calls i was told it sould have been flagged up I was paying for a package i wasnt receiving and they would up grade me to the up to 8mbs package.

This was done at last yesterday. I have rebootted, unpluged and re pluged in my router. But i cant see any change in speed.

This is my speed test result..

1466kbps ~~download

377kbps~~ upload

Am i right in saying thats not even reaching 1mbps?

How many kbps in a mbps?

I used mybroadbandspeed.co.uk to test it.

It does say the speed will fluctuate for awhile.

Thanx in advance.

1466kbps = 1.4Mbs roughly, I would suggest that you are probably still on the 2mb connection. Best time for checking is between 0100 and 0700 hrs

And if you have just been moved onto ADSL max, it can take up to ten days to train the line to the maximum reliable achievable speed.

I am on Virgin 2MB connection and am currently getting 1970kbps. Virgin being a pure cable system shouldn't need the 10 days training time.

Speed can also vary considerably during the day. I'm on BT Business Broadband and get downloads as quick as 7.4Mbps a certain times of day, whilst at other times it drops to around 2Mbps. Overall though I am getting much better rates than my previous ISP's 2Mbps fixed speed business broadband package and benefit from the faster uplink that ADSL max gives.

Virgin also supply ADSL max! see here

If fact their cable network coverage is not a very high percentage of the country.

  • polomint, I would be after a refund of the difference after 5yrs, it could be a good sum with compensation.

    A 2MB line gives a download rate of 250Kb's/sec

His line may not be able to support a higher speed. It is UP TO 8Mbps, not 8Mbps.

Depends if you are on cable or ADSL Max product .
ADSL Max takes up t 14 days to retrain to best connection if you are on ADSL Max only switch router off once per day ( night ) .
The end speed is far more dependant upon your internal wiring than the old 2MB service . Noise on the line length of line and interference from internal wiring all play a part . Its not unknown for the up to 8mb service to be worse than 2mb due to the difference in the nature of the product .

Before getting too excited, the OP should use this utility to get an idea of what bandwidth his line will support.
