I am SO looking forward to my bus pass (January 2010). I usually live in Spain but have been in the UK for five weeks and still have another two weeks to go, we intend to be here for months at a time in 2010 when I get my Pension - having been here this length of time I know I will wear my bus pass out.

I'm going to take a week off at a time off and travel around the UK!:D This is also fitting in with SKI-ing!

(edited to add) Merrywidows, I'd still like to take up your offer!
way to go...:jI would love to start seeing england...and am going to start soon as I can as I am disabled but have gone back to work part-time now (something to do with my pension if I don't) I get 2 weeks off come 1st December so would love to go christmas shopping in London anyone know how I can go from whitby north yorkshire to london for free...

    Plans for 2009
1/ Get fit. 2/ Get my figure back. 3/ Get the MAN BACK! :kisses2::happylove

  • You would have to plan the journey carefully as you'll only be allowed to use local bus services all the way down and back. Go to
http://www.buspassheaven.co.uk/index.php/plan-a-journey and use one of the options there to help plan the route.

It can be done and should be seen as an adventure and experience as you will need to plan for accomodation as you won't do it ina day.

Just had a holiday in the Isle of Wight. All their busses are free to buss pass holders, including the Island Breezers, open top for max fresh air. Mind you I do think some of the drivers are completely bonkers!!!!!!! ( no really, we had a great time) :j :T :j :rotfl: see this http://www.islandbuses.info/
  • This is the sort of post wanted on this thread i.e. details of free journeys made along with a web link. If you've made any interesting bus journeys on your bus pass since April 1st when the rules changed so that you could use it throughout England then please let everyone know on this thread.

Go for it Ice - Shopping in London in December is not for the faint hearted. How is Whitby these days - I hail from Saltburn and Redcar. I am sure we can all give you some information about the buses but you can also find out a lot from previous posts.

  • The longest in my neck of the woods is service 724 between Harlow and Heathrow (Central Bus Station). It's hourly (half as frequent on Sundays) and takes 185 minutes end to end during the working day. The recommended car route distance is about 60 miles but the 724 takes a more circuitous/non- motorway path. I'll ask the driver for the length of the bus journey when I'm next on the 724.

It passes the end of my street so provides an ideal way of getting to and from Heathrow.

The 724 is a limited stop service. Potential passengers waiting at other stops who don't know this are often seen shaking their fists as the driver sails past them.:rotfl:

Fares (for non free pass holders) are relatively high for short journeys. Passengers travelling a good distance are generally advised by the driver to buy a £7 Explorer which allows them to travel anywhere in Herts and neighbouring counties for the day. Four travelling together can buy a joint Explorer for a mere £10.

There are free buses in Scotland and Wales too ;)
  • Yes, think most people now know that but as islandman said on his first post on this thread..
It occurred to me that if a few people from every county, submitted details ie destination/frequency/journey times maybe we could produce an interesting/useful piece of information which could appear on it's own website. (I have to say I know nothing about producing websites).

Let's have some info on decent free rides in Scotland and Wales too. There must be some beautiful journeys in Scotland and Wales but English bus pass users have to remember that THEY will pay on these.

As do the Scottish and Welsh users when they travel in England, just pointing out that this is not a specific thread for English users.

Just thought I would add, every resident of pensionable age can get free bus and train journeys in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, so if two countries on one island can manage that, why are our 3 countries making one big country not up to the job?
