if you do go to cumbria make sure you visit a tourist information centre and pick up one of the booklets that have most of the main bus timetables. i say most because some arent included but all of the timetables that visitors are likely to need are included. if you plan to go into the lakes then i believe there is a national express coach that goes into the lakes. you can get a train to windermere or penrith which are alot closer than carlisle. however there is a bus that goes from carlisle to keswick and also another that goes to penrith and then another onto wherever you may want to go in the lakes.

...and if you go to the CumbriaCC website, there's an email contact to get it sent. And very prompt they were too!

(Which is more than can be said for our glorious Department for Transport. After more than a week, I'm still waiting for answers from them. Not even an acknowledgement!)

hi there, ive been trying to make it through the whole thread and made it up to the page before last. i'm disabled and so have a free disabled bus pass, can i use this in the same way you can with the free over 60 bus pass, throughout the country?

is there any way that maybe you could post the most useful links in the 1st post as its quite hard to trawl through all the messages even though is very helpful. looking forward to going to some interesting places!

is it only the national express buses that are free and not the coaches?

some of the bus journeys seem ridiculously long on traveline, do you think that is the best way to find your journey by bus?

    thanks for this post, katharine

yeah, i've been on the mailing list for a few years now. i didnt mention it myself because i dont know how to contact them about it anymore as i organised it for myself years ago, like i said. i also was not sure if they were still offering the service to new people.

    edit.
just to add i have just looked at that link and that leaflet is not what i was talking about but the name of the contact there rings a bell. so if it isnt the booklet that is called cumbria and lakes rider that you get then email that contact and ask if you can have one. it will have a map of the routes in the centre page like that leaflet that is shown does. to be honest you only need to ask for one by post if you need to play safe and plan what you are going to do in advance coz like i said before they have plenty available in the tourist information centres when you get there.

  • In Scotland, just google stage coach, and you will find plenty. www.stagecoachbus.com It is a great service. You can't use National Express www.nationalexpress.com/ with a bus pass in Scotland because you need to pay in advance and claim your money back. City linking www.citylink.co.uk is fine, but if you have to eat because you are a diabetic, it isn't so great. Rapsons www.rapsons.co.uk is limited and same problem. Also City linking and Rapsons don't let you take dogs as Mega bus www.megabus.com don't as well.
Time is more valuable than money. You can get more money but you can't get more time

All the passes work in the same way. That is, providing you have the new one issued in April.

I've tried to pull together a list of the longest bus routes in England (by time of travel).

If you know of any more over 2 hours let me know and I'll update it.

Leave Southsea 0843, arrive Brighton 1250]

Thank you Les - great work, Brighton and Southsea from Farway are more in my neck of the woods. Used to live in Saltburn on the coast before I left on my travels many moons ago and still have family there - so who knows your info might be very handy one day. Great work.
