Park one of each side by side (secondhand), which would you buy? Be honest now.. :D

well considering over the years i've had faultless ownership of a Citroen GS, Xantia, couple of AXs, Berlingo, C4 - probly clocking up about 400000 miles over that time...

and my mum has no trouble with her C3...

    i'd go with the C1 ;)

the only toyotas i've been in was a Yaris - which gave me terrible back pain and the works Hilux... which again - isnt the most refined of vehicles...

I'd seriously recommend checking out the Hyundai i10. You could get one new in your price range.

Agreed, I had a test drive in one in Spain last month, very impressive, they were released earlier there.;)

Thanks for all the advice everyone - I'm just back from test driving a C1 and I'm so disappointed! I really wanted to love it but it was so noisy at anything over 25 miles per hour! Does anyone know, is that the car or the fact that it has a 1.0 engine?

Try a Getz while you are there, a little bit more room, good spec.;)

The biggest cost of any car (other than a few hundred pound "banger") is always depreciation. So look at this figure first.
This makes any Hyundai i10 / i30 price over about £1,000 an expensive choice even with the 5 year warranty because they loose their value so fast. Extended warranties on other cars can be purchased if this is important to you.
I have nothing against Hyundai's I really thought the i30 was superb for the money and really deserves to hold it's value so much better than it does.
So dealing with the depreciation demon first I would test drive any Skoda Fabia, Mazda 2, VW Polo, Mini (top choice if it has enough space for you) all of which hold their value well above average. The Mini may seem poor value considering the age of one you can get for £5K-£6K but it hold it's value so well it should be considered.
Out of that lot I would pick the Mini if it was big enough for my needs or the Skoda Fabia if not. If you were buying brand new a list price £13,500 Mini One 1.4 with essential Pepper Pack is exactly the same cost as a £10,000 Skoda Fabia 1.2 when you break it down as an average monthly cost per month over 36 months.
The odd £35 on road tax or few mpg is insignificant compared to depreciation costs.

Thanks. I liked the i10 more than I liked the C1 but am going to look a bit bigger - I want to be green but i like my comfort too much! Having a look at Honda Jazz & a mini, as advised - thanks all:D

If you want something roomy but cheap to inure I'd suggest the Grande Punto.
Group 2 insurance for the 1.2 - decent economy (I get 45mpg) and the biggest car in its class. Loads of boot space and good features even in the base active model (electric windows, cd player with steering wheel controls, trip computer, follow me home headlights etc) although the basic active model does not have air con (but that does help economy).

Another overlooked option is a Daihatsu Sirion, basically a Toyota, same company, a larger car than the Hyundai i10, but not a lot more expensive.

    Very well equipped.
