Did you say you've got 3 kids or did I dream that? (sorry, can't be bothered to read back, it's late!)
What about putting some of the money into trusts for your kids until they're 18 or 21 (or both, i.e split it so they get £X when they're 18 and £Y when they're 21...)? Seems a logical decision to me, provided the interest is good that is...?0 -

Can't your ex-hubby make up the shortfall to look after his kids? If he's so comfortably off then let him know the csa will be after him. You could say if you can't make ends meet then you and the kids will have to move in with him....
Do they check businesses in your name? You could pop it all in a business account after creating a ltd company and invest it in the name of the business. You wouldn't have direct access to the money but neither would the benefits lot be able to say it was yours as it belongs to a business and it is a criminal offence for a director to take money out that would cause the business to fail. Check this isn't illegal

"Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.
Mrs. Pench took the money. "What will you do with it all? Not that it's any of my business," he giggled.
"I think I'll become an alcoholic," said Betty.0 -

Could you buy a sort of holiday caravan chalet type thing? Rent it out during the summer and (almost) free holidays the rest of the time. Surely you could get something for 50k0

Yes, on the portion of the money spent recklessly. So the amount spent on living would be fine, but boob jobs and fast cars probably not!...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0
