i'm 24 and was asked for ID tonight in the pub :j
  • I supervised the checkouts at a large supermarket and one of my jobs was to authorise age-restricted sales for under-age cashiers.
Believe me, this is not an easy job! I've ID'd people in their 30s and most people are flattered.....except those over 18 who haven't brought ID! I've even had customers saying to their friends they hope they get ID'd!

I know it's a cliche that 'we're only doing our job'. But if we get it wrong we face personal prosecution, and the store being fined and/or banned from selling alcohol.

What I do find strange is that the under 18s can't sell alcohol without authority from myself, yet as I'm 41 they've got a far better idea of what an under-18 looks like!

    :rotfl: "I was 30-40 when I was last asked".....fibbers!

Hey it's not that ridiculous, recently I was asked in Morrisons when buying ciggies for my hubby. I am 32 but only 5 foot tall and was standing with my 13 year old daughter and her pals. I have always looked younger but haven't been asked for ID for years. I do remember getting asked for ID for a Lottery ticket when I was about 24 as well. :rotfl:

Aged 29, I was asked for ID to buy a bottle of wine... I said "well, you have to be over 18 to have a credit card, and that's how I'm paying". The response: "no problem, but we still need to verify your age".

Don't know if you're aware of this, but any kid of any age can have a credit card. As long as the card holder, the person liable for the spending, is willing to pay then the credit card company will issue a card to that person. A lot of parents do this for their kids so they can spend what they like without the parent having to be with them, also very useful for kids at boarding schools.

This is even easier with chip and pin these days! I've certainly borrowed my parents credit card a few times to go to Tesco's. Admittedly I'm over 18 now!
  • I'm 23 and get ID'd on a regular basis, it's more often in the large chains like Wetherspoons, Tesco etc. In smaller pubs etc. I don't tend to get ID'd as often.

It's annoying but I understand the penalties for staff are severe - however unless you have an expensive proof of age card then you do need to take a passport or driving license everywhere you go, and I can't imagine that is a good thing - think about the possible consequences in terms of identity theft if it gets stolen on a night out.
  • Hey it's absolutely ridiculous, Id must not only be asked for but actually looked at......My second son whom is now nearly 19 and brown longish fringe, collar length todays fashion hairstyle , with brown eyes had been using his 20 year old brothers passport to get alcohol in supermarkets, access to pubs and clubs on a regular basis. (ie every weekend) for the last couple of underage years . I might add that my eldest boy has very short blonde hair and piercing blue eyes.... They are so so very different....

So if they ask for ID can they actually look at it !!

    A mothers nightmare.:T

we have just returned from Florida and my 28 year old son was asked for ID at Animal Kingdom theme park when he told the vendor his age he was told that as he was under 30 he would need someone to buy his drink (beer)for him who was over 30.Can you imagine that happening here.

i was last asked in Florida, Halloween night in universal studios, i was buying a bud from a mobile bar when she asked me, i replayed with "sod off, I'm 37" she then served me without question.

I was in the States last Christmas visiting my in laws.

My mother in law who is 68, went into a shop to buy some alchol for a party we were going to. She got carded - that is she was asked for ID.

We were killing ourselves laughing. She thinks she is a young thing.
