Aesthetics really. And just because I could! :D I was also concerned that sometimes our cats take their time coming in and was worried that if they triggered the flap outside the wall and stalled inside the wall section (having left the porch area) then by the time they decide to actually come through the flap it may have re-locked again.
Thanks MrsE, but I think I've found a way around it....

I can't view it from the link, can anyone else?

Does putting the canopy inside the wall cavity (which is I guess what you have done) not interfere with the daylight sensor?

It should work, but I've sent you a direct link by PM.

The light sensor is actually within the tunnel section of the main unit (on the Smart Flap at least, perhaps this has changed from the old model?).

It shouldn't matter either way - the light switching level can be adjusted and so given that the inner wall section will follow the outdoor light levels, just darker, you can adjust the setting to suit.

    I did wonder that.

Nice tidy job, do you have any operational problems with it? People seem to have more problems with the wall versions that the other type.

Thanks for uploading them MrsE! Maybe one day I'll be trusted enough to put them up myself! ;)

Do you think you get less wind/draft/rain/water problems with it being sunk?

None at all. Indeed given the sensor location it guarantees a perfect scan as the cats simply cannot avoid it.

Perhaps problems that you've heard about might be attributable to my concerns about the porch (sensor) being cited in the 'normal' exterior fashion and hence being further away from the flap running the risk of re-locking before the cat finally decides to go through? The default unlock time is 4 seconds after the cat has left the sensor however mine sometimes loiter for longer than that, particular if the other cat is waiting on the other side!

(Sorry, missed that question - getting lost in the thread! At this rate my 'new user' status will be lifted in no time at all! :rotfl:)

By sunk do you mean recessed in the wall? Certainly it's not going to get any rain ingress (the wall is protected somewhat by the eves, and you can see that there's a bell cast bead above the opening which diverts any rain from the wall away from the base of the tunnel).

It probably makes little difference to wind/draft although the flap itself is fairly well provisioned with snug fitting draft excluders.

I wouldn't be too sure it makes no difference.

I think you might have just hit on the perfect fitting style to avoid some drawbacks.

    I'm puzzled now.

Do the wall ones have two flaps?

One on each unit, inside unit & outside?

My walls are quite thick & I would need a few liners.
