I'm planning on getting the wall version, should I get the old model or the new smartflap one?
I'm thinking the old model as its larger & my boys are still kittens & going to be big. They are exotics, Charlies dad & grandad are enormous!

    Hi MrsE,

Presumably this is to replace an existing catflap? If so, you may be swung by the fact that the Smart Flap fits the same cutout as Staywell flaps, which could well be the same/similar as other 'standards' flaps. The old model, by virtue of it being quite large, obviously requires a bigger cutout which may or may not be an issue for you.

One of our cats is fairly large and fits through the Smart Flap without trouble. As you know cats are fairly flexible and so unless yours grew to mammoth proportions I'm sure there'd be no issue with the 'smaller' (I'd say 'normal') size of the Smart Flap. That said, I suppose there's large and there's LARGE!

The Smart Flap also has battery backup thus continuing operation (to an extent) in a power cut, and has potential for future expansion (e.g. selective exit and even a PC interface!).

[Edit: I note you mentioned getting the wall version. This one doesn't allow the battery backup function (by virtue of how the flap works in battery mode). Confusingly, we've got the door version of the new Smart Flap but it is fitted in a wall albeit in a non-standard fashion]

You pays your money you takes your choice!

No its a first flap, so no prior hole.

I thought you had to get a wall version for a wall, because the power between the inside & outside was a greater gap then a standard door/glass.

Charlie is normal sized now, hes nearly a year old, but exotics are a slow maturing breed & his dad & grandad were huge. But then Charlies been snipped;) at 6 months, so maybe he won't grow so big. He has the big round head though, like a ball:D

The difference between the door and wall versions (at least with the old model, I am assuming the same is true of the Smart Flap) is the length of the cable connecting the main unit to the scanner in the porch.

Hence, unless you were putting the scanner inside the wall 'tunnel' you'd need the wall version for the extra cable length.

    Does that make sense?

Its the connecting cable I'm talking about.

Isn't it longer in the wall version, to allow for a wall being thicker than a door/window?

That's right, but that's because of the particular way I was fitting it (putting the scanner coil inside the wall section).

I had some photos lined up to post but as I'm a new user the forum doesn't allow it!

Why did you want to fit the scanner in the wall rather than outside it?

You can send the photos to me & I can post them if you like?

Aesthetics really. And just because I could! :D I was also concerned that sometimes our cats take their time coming in and was worried that if they triggered the flap outside the wall and stalled inside the wall section (having left the porch area) then by the time they decide to actually come through the flap it may have re-locked again.

Thanks MrsE, but I think I've found a way around it....

[Edit: I'm no longer considered a new user so I can post a proper link!]
