Bought a pet Porte yesterday from pet planet.
I ordered for Saturday delivery because I am fed up of opening and closing our old cat flap with magnetic catch.
Was in a rush when ordered and realized last night that I had not entered a complete address on my order form.
Just my postcode, town and phone number.
Thought it would never get here But then this morning at 08:00 got a phone call from courier asking to confirm details as he was 5 minutes away.
Looking forward to good nights sleep.
Cat seems to find it easier to enter than our old magnetic cat flap.
Hope dont get any problems that some if you have had.

We usually ask a relative to call in to feed the cat and let her in and out if we're away for a few days, but as that involves the inconvenience of calling twice per day, if we're going for a week or more we use the cattery, which she absolutely hates and won't eat while she's there. So, we thought it would be better for her and less inconvenience for our relative if they just had to call once per day to check the food and water, and the cat could let herself in and out (that's the theory anyway)
We have just taken delivery of a new pet porte catflap, and I was going to fit it today and the cat is booked in tomorrow to be chipped. However, I read in the instructions that a small percentage of chips won't operate the flap, so it's best to test the unit with the chipped cat first, before installing it.
Are all of these chips pretty much standard, because we weren't going to use the Vets - we have booked her in at a local place which does various pet related services and procedures, and offers chipping for £10. I'm wondering if there's likely to be any difference in the chips used by the Vets and this other place ? Anybody more clued up on this who could advise me ?
    Thanks

I found the following on the petporte site,

    3. How can I tell if my pet's microchip will work with the cat flap?

The Petporte Smart Flap® will read all fifteen-digit microchips; these are the microchips that are used in the UK and throughout Europe. It will not read the ten-digit American microchips. If you would like to ensure that your pet's number will work, try our Microchip Compatibility Checker and enter the microchip number.

Please note that chip numbers 985140xxxxxxxxx and 977200xxxxxxxxx will work with the Pet Porte but may have a much reduced detection (sensing) range.

Above was taken from here question number 3.

So I guess if you take those numbers with you and make sure they don't use them you should be ok.

  • Hi Rhylbloke - think I can answer your question! I was getting my cat chipped just before I installed the Petporte so rang them to check about chips. They confirmed that some chips - mainly those that also have a temperature-reading facility incorporated (Biotherm??) - do not read properly/as well as others.

I asked which chip was best for the Petporte and they confirmed it was a Bayer Tracer. Amongst those they'd tested this had the best and most consistent readings. My vet uses a different make as his standard but ordered a Bayer Tracer for me no problem which was at the vets the next day. Think it was about £15. They certainly weren't pushing me to go for a Bayer but were happy to tell me which they thought worked best. As I had the option I decided I may as well go for that one.

Fingers crossed it has never failed (3 years) and the one time the flap didn't seem to be reading the chip and opening the problem turned out to be the coil failing - Petporte sent me a new coil free of charge which my husband fitted. Our cat gets into all sorts of fun and games outside so I'd often worried that the chip would migrate but it still reads fine.

Only other thing Petporte said to me was to ask the vet to insert the chip as high up the scruff as possible - there's a bit of room for play in where to inject it so higher up the better. This gives the best (closest) range possible when the cat is under the little porch of the Petporte as it's the coil in this porch that reads the chip so the higher up the neck the chip is inserted the closer it is to the coil.

    Hope that helps!

Whichever door or wall you can cut a whole to fit it in to? & I would tend to use the back door in to your garden rather than the front door on to the road.
  • Hi, I've been having some problems with my petporte, was wondering if anyone knew the answer!

Had it since August and always worked a treat, recently though we had a power cut and since that the night mode won't work correctly.

When I put night mode back on the green light and red lock constantly kept clicking on and off. I tried adjusting the light settings hoping it would fix it which did help, but it is still sporadicaly clicking on and off from time to time. Any ideas? I only used to use the default light setting before (they worked fine).
  • Try turning power of for 30 seconds and see if it resets to default.

  • Thanks, I did call them yesterday and they suggested unplugging it, holding the red button 10 seconds to do a master reset, then turn it back on and hold the green 30 secs to return to default. Didn't work :( .

I will call them again today, I'm thinking the light sensors become faulty, it seems to be sensing the light from inside the house and thinking it's from the outside? Also any shadows cast on it from inside make it lock...our cat went to go outside during the day and it kept locking in his face everytime he was standing over it, poor think looked reet confused :rotfl: .
