I'm afraid I've had this happen too.
When I took my girls for their first "grown up" cut,the hairdresser found a few empty egg shells on the youngest, and refused to see the rest of us (two adults and four children)
When I objected, she claimed health and safety would shut them down if they continued?
She also refused to refund our deposits, saying she would now have to throw away everything,ie the trainee's overalls, the capes, towels, combs, clips & even the scissors!!
As we hadn't used any of those things, not even a comb,I told her she was being ridiculous,& I would not leave without a haircut or my money, but my friend is a timid soul & begged me to just leave.
I wonder how many other mums have been badly treated, and like me are too embarassed to tell anyone?

The nitty gritty comb got rid of all the husks in my daughters hair, best £10 I've ever spent!

Dont worry we had the case of nits, but as my daughter called them "the visitors", digressing slightly, but may be worth trying tea tree shampoo and conditioner once a week, as the visitors dont like them, I got sainsburys own brand 54p a bottle.

I've used a cheap bottle of tea tree conditioner and a nit comb, and i must of put half a bottle on my sons head, a good hour just combing through did the trick, and my son is like me very very very thick hair, you could hide stuff in his fair for months.

I've never used any 'special' nit shampoo or special comb apart from a bog standard nit comb from boots i think it was, i have only had to do it once.
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?

I am a hairdresser and I have to put the hairdressers' position across.
Healthh & Safety in this country is very strict. Too strict if you ask my personal opinion. BUt the laws are very clear. We as hairdressers cannot continue with our services if we find lice in hair. Most hairdressers will not risk cutting hair even if they are just empty egg shells in the hair. Salons can and do get shut down for continuing services when lice are found. Other customers can report salons and swift action can be taken to shut the salon down. No hairdresser in the right minds will jeapordise their livelihood over extra commission for one haircut.

Health and Safety laws do indeed require all equipment, gowns, towels and anything else in contact to be discarded. Certain items such as scissors can be sterilised.

As precious as your daughter's hair maybe, I would have taken the same position as the hairdresser that told you that you would have to leave. There is no *duty* for the hairdresser to cut your hair. It is a sensitive issue, I agree, but creating a scene will only make the situation worse as you are asking the hairdresser to break Health and Safety laws by insisting they continue with their service. This would be unfair and wrong on your part.

We've got a nitty gritty and its amazing. The amount of *ick* you get out even after using a normal lice comb is unbelievable, well worth the money if you can't get it on prescription. :)

Another vote for the nitty gritty comb from me.:T and I'd spent a fortune on treatments that didn't work before buying this.

If you have long(ish) fingernails and are not squeamish about it, you can take them out yourself, just pull them down the hair. It is time-consuming!

My DD had nits over a year ago and still has some husks in her hair. I pull them out with my fingernails as it's the only way I can get them out. She has really fine hair and it's a nightmare. It still makes me itch now to think of it and I check her hair obsessivley (sp?). Now I'm itching again!

when my daughter has had nits i always buy lyclear (the stuff doesnt work any more ) but the free comb is the best and easiest most painless around!

anyway the combs they sell in tesco are naff (hurt loads0 as do the metal and electric ones on sale.

personally the best methd i have come across is to use the nit comb after conditioning her hair religiously doing the combing morning , after school & at night sorts itout quite quickly. Now i use tea tree & mint shampoo (less smelly to deter the little blighters!

Hi all, horrible subject but any advice greatly appreciated. My 2 girls were meant to be getting thier hair cut today, both excited obv, anyway, the hairdresser, luckily shes my friend, couldnt do it as they had nit egg carcasses in thier hair, there were no live nits and no eggs, theyve been clear for a long time. I was told by the health visitor that you cant get rid of the carcasses, you have to wait for them to grow out. What can i do, i comb through thier hair every time its washed but we cant get rid of the damn things, shes coming back next week and will cut thier hair if clear of the carcasses. Obv they so want thier hair cut, they had printed pictures of the styles they wanted and everything bless em. Does anyone know of a comb that will get rid of the carcasses, we currently use the two layered metal one but it wont get rid of them, any help would be really appreciated, sorry to go on one on such a horrible subject but they were really upset, you know what its like when you get so excited about having your hair cut, also my friend who was going to cut it mentioned she felt like the wicked witch of the west, i appreciate her concerns and obv want to sort it for them all,. Please help  , again i stress thier is no live eggs or nits, its the blooming carcasses. Thanks in advance xxx

We had terrible problems with our daughter when she was younger. We should have shares in nit shampoo we used so much, we and all of her friends and their family were treating them, unfortunately one of them didn't!!

She was also distressed about the nit eggs, a friends of mine gave me advise. Buy a cheap bottle of conditioner, smother the hair in and wrap will a towel overnight. Not a nice job, it took me hours and hours as she had such long hair, but the eggs did slip out of the hair with the use of a nit comb.
