Yep, hair straighteners killed the problem for us, happened by pure chance, DD started using them as a fashion accessory and Hey Presto! After a short time of using them, no more lice!
Cheapest chemical free option to my mind, only wish we'd discovered it years earlier!

Really annoyed that parents don't bother checking their children's hairs for head lice. I regularly check my children and found them in one last night. I sat for over an hour going through with a comb and conditioner, and sent a note into school - but they will probably get re-infested by someone who's parents don't bother. Bring back the nit nurse.
Also, whilst i am having a rant!!!! Really sick of dog owners who don't pick up after their dogs. Have had it trodden into the house several times recently and it is a real health hazard!!!!!
Rant over - sorry everyone.now mum of 4!!!0 -
Having a bad day 3kidsnomoney?
Seriously though, I do whole heartedly agree with you on both counts.
However I do have to confess that a few weeks ago DS who's 13 kept scratching his head and he did ask me to check his hair. But I didn't as I knew he'd been using a shampoo that makes me itch like mad and put it down to that. Plus I knew DD didn't have nits as I check her regularly because or so I thought she is the one most likley to get them being in primary school.
OMG how wrong I was. This particular day DD brought a letter home from school saying that a case of nits had been reported in the class, check hair blah, blah ,blah. So I did that night and found 2 very differently sized ones, no eggs or egg cases so assumed that she had just picked them up that day.
Then I checked DS, just incase. He was infested to say the least. So I hold my hands up to being a very bad mother and not checking him. But as he hasn't had them for years I honestly didn't expect to find any. Plus he obviously showers himself and stuff now anyway.
The only logical explanation I can think of is that this case of nits and the length of time that he has had them coincides with the arrival of a girlfriend. I did actually ask him if they cuddled, to which he went bright red and said yes. So I can only assume that that is where he has got them from. So I'm back to combing and conditioning him every 3 days now for the foreseeable future. Big lesson learnt there.
As for the dog mess issue eewwww. I often have the pleasure of watching dog owners allow their dogs do their business on the patch of grass right outside my house. Plus our next door neighbours didn't bother making sure their dog stayed in their garden when our fence blew down. It merrily did it's business in our garden for 3 days until we could replace the panel with another. Where upon all deposits that it had made were duly returned to our neighbours garden via the scoop and flick method.0 -
DD came home with her first infestation of lice 2 weeks ago from school. She's nearly 5. There was no warning from school - aparently they are not allowed to send a letter home
these days!
Well we treated her and no return thankfully - but no doubt she will get more!

because they just don`t care OP
my mother checked our hair every single week (50 years ago) and that was in the day of the nit nurse and real poverty. Two of my 6 siblings got nits once and I never had any all through my school days but the derbac comb was always used anyway, just in case
I did the same with my own children and all through their time at school, only had to treat them once
don`t get me going on lazy, selfish dog owners.0 -
Thanks for your replies and letting me have a rant everyone.now mum of 4!!!0

can i join the rant about dog poo?
now i cannot prove who it is but someone down my road recently 'rescued' a dog. not ideal circumstances for this person to have a dog at the moment given their housing situation but they are moving very soon to better accommodation. and good on them for rescuing a lovely pup.
however, there is dog !!!! everywhere out on the pavement, it has never been this bad before. maybe its just coincidence and im hardly going to hide out in the bushes to see if it is this person letting the pup poop and not clearing up.
its just disgusting, and we all (including pup owner) have small children. There's someone in my head, but it's not me0 -
I'm with you Anthill.
A lot of people don't get their dogs wormed properly which is a real health risk.
Apart from this it is disgusting.
