I got mine on prescription from the doctors too - far better than the lotions and potions on the market. I printed out the info and took it to my GP, Boots took awhile getting the comb but was well worth the wait.
The school send home the plastic combs but these tend to break.

To be honest, I really wouldn't bother with commercial lotions - they cost a fortune and are crap,! You'd be better off getting a decent comb - we have a Nitty Gritty one which cost £11 but is the best thing ever! It catches everything, no matter how big or small and because it's made of metal it won't break any of the teeth off. I got mine from https://www.raisingkids.co.uk years ago, but you can probably google for it.
Just wash hair, use loads of conditioner and then comb through until you don't catch anything else on the comb. Dead easy. Leave it for two days and then do it again, and keep repeating every two days until they've gone.BCSC # 9 and proud! :beer:0 -
I agree about the lotions, a waste of money plus I wouldn't want to put such strong poisons on any of our heads!
I've found Boots plastic nit comb with tea tree conditioner works well for us. It can take a good while to totally break the breeding cycle of the nits so I tend to comb every day or two for months. My son uses a nit comb every day when he has a shower now so that they don't come back, from what I hear many teachers do to!
Just comb, comb, comb!:smileyhea "here, hare, here" :smileyhea0 -
hi all
can anyone tell me is it possible to have just one head lice/nit
the story goes, my niece went to the hairdresser last week to have a cut and blowdry, all very nice but she came home from school today saying all the people in dining room were saying she had nits - it turns out there was a girl from a year above niece who was doing her work experience at the hairdressers and told class that hairdresser had made her bleach the floors and brushes etc after my niece had left because she had lice, my daughter who is at the same school asked the girl why she was saying this and she said the hairdresser had told her - today i went to hairdresser and asked if it was the case and she said my niece did have head lice and it was for thier hygiene that floors etc were bleached, she said she did not want to upset my niece by telling her she had them - i scoured her hair and head and took her to surgery nurse who gave her a thorough check up and said there was totally no sign of any infestation or eggs or that there has been any, so back to the hairdresser who then said she only found the one which she picked off - is it possible to have just one lice and no eggs.
i went to chemist but the shampoo stuff is so expensive has anyone any ideas what i can use to show anything up or sort them out.
sorry for rambleyes you can beat it :j - everyday is a bonus - use it well0 -
Hi,
I was so sorry to hear about that happening to your niece, it wasn't handled very well at all by the hairdresser.
As someone who used to be obsessed with head lice (had them once and became about checking everyone else's around me)! In fact now everyone comes to me if they're not sure if they've got them or not!
It really doesn't sound like your niece has them, but just to be on the safe side, please do not waste a penny on expensive treatments.
The BEST ever way to treat them is to shampoo the hair and then slather on load and loads of conditioner, comb through thoroughly with a nit comb continuously while the conditioner is still on. Go through with your fingers also to pick any stubborn ones up!
I was also told about this donkey's years ago by a scientist I worked with who swore it was the only thing that worked.
Good luck

I absolutely agree with lisaf! It doesn't sound like your neice has them.
But if she has then it's comb, comb, comb, that's the only way and it's the healthiest way. My son had them a couple of years ago and he routinely combs every night just incase! Schools are rife with them so prevention is much better than cure.:smileyhea "here, hare, here" :smileyhea0 -
I think that is absoloutly disguting that the work experience girl blabbed to everyone but chances are that shes had them too.
They are so common now as they are immune to lotions a lot of the time. I never had them as a kid but since having kids its an ongoing thing...especially if they have to sit near someone who parents dont care if their kid has nits and does nothing about them as was the case with my poor son who had a crew cut all through primary to help prevent it.
Tea tree oil is ok as a preventative but i have only ever seen the crawlers once. Best thing is to look in nice bright NATURAL light with a fine toothed comb. You will see a sort of hair coloured tiny lump on the hair strand that you will find is really well glued to the hair. Thats the nit.
Best way is a nit comb and tonnes conditioner and thoroughly go through hair as close to scalp as you can and do it every 2 or 3 days for 2 weeks. That usually gets the little suckers!
Don't ask a man to look for nits in your hair as they are rubbish in my experience!
Just re read . It is pretty rare just to have one nit egg. She probably has more and she just didnt spot them. I think the further the nit egg down the hair shaft shows the length of time she had them . I am currently in the same boat with my DD , she had some quite far down the hair shaft and i suspect they have hatched and all gone but im daily checking and finding less daily(only 1 today) . They like the warm bits usually like behind the ears, nape neck or fringe edges . But you MUST comb the hair with a nit comb to break the lice legs and be able to spot eggs.
