Update;the extending baking tray worked a treat,i baked a 2lb loaf in the top rack, and had 2 sandwich tins baking down low on the Aldi tray(very low,cos the bread was to be baked at 230,and sponge 180!)...edges of the sponge turned out a bit crispy, but other than that it was a success, and i have a fresh loaf and a nice victoria sandwich...i'l read more of this thread to get an idea of things that bake at similar temps.Slimming World..Wk1,..STS,..Wk2,..-2LB,..Wk3,..-3.5lb,..Wk4,..-2.5,..Wk5,..-1/2lb,Wk6,..STS,..Wk7,..-1lb.

Hello. I'm roasting a chicken this morning to make meals/stock with for the next few days. I'll have an empty shelf in the oven (normally it would be taken up with potatoes/veg but won't be today) can I bake a cake in there or will the chicken taint the flavour of the cake?0
-
can't say i've ever noticed my veg and potatoes tasting of chicken, so it shouldn't do.0

I've never had a problem with chicken. Some very strong fish, yes, but not chicken. If you're really worried, perhaps cut back on any onion/garlic you were using. The key thing is to wash your hands really well before you handle your cake, particularly any butter. Butter absorbs flavours and smells very quickly and I suspect any flavour transfer probably comes from lingering garlic/onion oils than anything else.0

No, I don't think it will taint the cake. In fact, I think you'll be left with two delicious dishes if you decide to make the cake and it will also be saving you having to heat the oven twice (energy and money saving!).
If you do notice any food is beginning to taste of other cooked things check if your oven needs a clean. I had to clean ours at the weekend after we realised that mint leaves we were drying for tea tasted like a roast dinner! haha!:A Thanks to all the lovely people who contribute their advice! :A0 -
Thanks everyone. I got it into my head that the steam that comes off the chicken would get into the cake. Won't be using onion & garlic- fussy husband would never speak to me again if I abused his chicken in such a way
My oven definitely needs a clean. I'm putting it off as long as possible though0 -

I hope it wouldn't taint as I'm planning on doing the same thing myself later on this afternoon. Beetroot cupcakes, nom nom nom. DS and I like beets but the other 2 would think I was trying to poison them if I served them up any other way. DD *loves* taking beetroot cake to school.
