Update Note 8 April
The full Car Insurance Job Picker is now live

Thanks for all the feedback in the thread below; we've tried to take on board all you said...
_____________________________________

What is it?

The Car Insurance Job Picker is a tool we've been playing with; half way between a bit of fun and a full MoneySaving device. By subtly changing your job title - within legal bounds you may be able to change job.
This is a tool at its last trial stage, please help by testing it, see if it works, and feedback your experience in this thread.

E.g. In my case I could legitimately call myself

A. A journalist
B. A broadcaster
c. A company director
D. A internet worker.

But all are priced differently. Someone else could be an office worked, admin assistance, office assistant, secretarial worker - all to describe the SAME job.

What do I want

We're in our final stage of testing and want you to have a play with it. See how it works. Do you understand what to do? Are there any glitches. did you break it. And then tell us what you think and how it works.

Then we'll try and make it better on the back :)

Test It Here: (note this is a test page, and won't work once the tool is properly up and running.) TOOL NOW LIVE

What we already know

This is not a finished tool, we've some graphics to polish and a little functionality to add. The one big thing that's missing is the links to explanations and what to do next.

Yet whatever you spot, just put it down, if we already plan to do it, no problem.

It should be fun

You can also use it to compare how cheap your job is compared to friends.

When can you change job? ('Is is Legit?' mentions in the tool)

This is currently missing in the tool - it will be there when launched. In a nutshell the answer is...

"Would a reasonable person who knew what your job was, say it is reasonable to call yourself that job title?"

Thanks so much for all your help...

Martin

Claims Assessor options - the projected lowest cost is a Credit Controller which is not a similar job role.
The nearest job role is an assessor which the calculator says it could possiably save me aprox £4 a year.
To be honest i would be happy in using that in the future... but.....

To double check i put in 2 quotes via moneysupermarket, and only difference being one i put Claims Assessor, and the other 'Assessor'.
I was suprised to see that although the majority of companies gave the same quotes, the ones that did quote differently had actually increased the quote for assessor, not decreased as the calculator suggested - thus it possiably could have cost me more by using the calculator!
  • Doesn't seem to work with Operamini.

An interesting result. We do it by job sampling and the result is an average of the top ten quotes - rather than just the top one; as the varience then is disproportionate.

Yet with a £4 difference, it can swing either way. It's one of the reasons I'm branding this a FUN tool and it (in the bit you can't see yet) does say "always double check with your actual quote).

We've seem some very big differences in other sectors.

    Also to note. You say
Claims Assessor options - the projected lowest cost is a Credit Controller which is not a similar job role.

This is interesting to read as we don't say its similar we just list all the other jobs in the same sector for you to scroll down adn see what fits...

    Did this not come across?

Its offers up some very odd jobs. Just how many "Chicken Sexers" are there in the UK? Chicken Chaser is offered as an alternative but clicking on the link "is this legit" displays the message "Whoops this page no longer exists".

Don't know if this is the type of feedback you want but when I clicked on the "Is this legit?" it came back with Error 404 - Page not found, take it this is just teething until all the pages are linked. Anyhoo, it would save me £22.30 swapping job title of "housewife" to "curator" and I suppose I could be called that!

    ps what is an almonder?

My job wasn't recognised (HM Forces) but by chosing clerical it offered some interesting options, most cheaper than what I pay currently. Maybe I shouldn't own up to my job!
