Hi i am interested in hearing other ppls thoughts on what they think ofmy weekly budget. I'm a 22 year old student/apprentice who lives alone. I have a £100 p.w. budget which includes £50 petrol which is needed for going to work and £15 food. That leaves me £35 for everything else each week i.e. electric, phone, university materials, bday presents. I'm finding it really really hard to stick to the budget but am managing. Is my budget a little bit too low?

The trouble with your list of things that your £35 is supposed to cover is that they aren't the sort of things that fit into a weekly kind of budget.

You need to have somewhere to save the surplus in the good weeks, so that when a utility bill arrives, or someone close has a birthday, you've got a reserve to draw on. Then you won't feel you've failed if this week's spend is over £35, as long as you had enough in your reserve to cover it.

That means, of course, that you need plenty of weeks when you don't spend as much as £35, so that you can build the reserve up ready for when you need it.

    Good luck!

Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Hi, I have an imac and cannot get the budget planner to work any one know how ? cheers

You can try one of the Spending Tracker tools. They're essentially the same thing, but with extra functionality. Some of the tools are totally web-browser based, just Google them, as I'm not allowed to mention my favourite one here.

  • Forget my last.

I think I found the answer.

I discovered today that I can add e-savings accounts through online banking. I now need to discover whether I can pay people from these accounts. They have account numbers and sort codes, so I can't see why not.

Then I need to see if I can work out how to give them a meaningful name, like 'Mortgage' or 'Electricity'.

I also need to read up on exactly how many of these e-saving accounts I can have. So far, It looks like I could easily use around TWENTY! Realistically I think I may have to lump a few categories into the same account.

    Regards

    Monty
another idea is using prepayment cards which you can pay money on and use to pay bills with as well.

    Hi there Everyone.

I made use of the budget planner and found that it didnt exactly meet my needs so i set about to change the spreadsheet so it was more suited but along the way i thought i'll start from stratch.

In my haste and possibly boredom (as had been unemployed for a while now and wanted something logical and useful to do to keep the mind active) i set about to work out what the possible NI and Tax that would be paid on different incomes either per week per month or per annum.

So i set about and got a copy of the current and planned personall allowances for next year so i could work out what i would be earning (roughly) as to start paying off debt and also saving fo my upcoming child.

Main reason for doing this is so that i could evalutae yearly monthly and weekly (if applicable) m,y pay should be after Tax and NI.

Especially as when the 10p tax was in force i was being charged the basic rate which was 22p and ended up getting roughly about a £100 Pcm written off my wages. All because of a lost P45 and then another lost P46 at the employer i was at at the time.

Anyhow if anybody is interested in either helping out with this to make it more usable or if it is you just want to have a look then PM me.

    Thanks
  • Hey All, I am new at these forums but like everyone else and trying to save some extra pennies and see where I am spending my money. I found this site called mymunnyminder.com that is free to use right now. It only asks for a little bit of personal information like name and and a password to log in and then you customize your budget to you. I found it really easy to use and the nice thing is I can access it even when I am not at home.
Hope this helps some of you others who are like me...trying to just keep track.
