Tesco fuel price policy - refund double the difference

  • :T I've got an ASDA Mastercard which I pay off in full evey month. It gives me cashback once a year (probably not a great rate but better than a kick in the teeth) but now it is offering card holders 2p off each litre of fuel for the foreseeable future and without having to spend £50 in store. Considering ASDA is the cheapest PFS in my area anyway, I'm not complaining.

I got the "we try to be the cheapest within 3 miles" flannel yesterday, having filled up (with 5p/litre off voucher) and found Mr Shell down the road 1p/litre cheaper. No refund = boo! Tesco website doesn't have a petrol price policy on any more, but I did find this on the 'customer service - at the CS desk' page: "We monitor petrol prices up to a 3 mile radius to ensure that you will not buy petrol cheaper." Think I'll see what happens next time. All the same £1/litre for diesel = ouch!!

I tried the policy at Tesco about 3 weeks ago. they said they no longer guarantee to beat anyone so no refunds anymore at all.
Their policy now is effectivly "You're on your own". The explanation was that when petrol became more expensive competition became more intense so they cound not offer to beat everyine. Sounds like an opportunty to make more cash for them if u ask me.
The fact that their web site no longer has a reference confirms the fact that they no longer have a price match/beat policy.
  • Really?? They've been the cheapest around here lately  But there have been times they were 4p more than Shell, which coincided with their "spend £50 and get 5p off a litre" :rotfl:

    Thanks

    They have stopped it.

Ones around me do drop the price to match the cheapest although they sometimes are not the quickest at it. Odd thing was we got petrol today at Tesco and it was 1p more on the sign than the other local petrol stations but when you looked at the pump the price was lower, so I assume they hadn't got around to changing the roadside sign.

The opposite happened to me a few months ago - the sign was 1p cheaper than the actual pump price. But when I challenged the cashier about it after filling up, the normal R+R/misprice rules most certainly did not apply! Although they did (very begrudgingly) refund the difference of about 41p.

By ending their "double the difference" and "cheapest in the area" promises at least they are finally being more honest, as when these policies were in place they were an absolute shambles and often not adhered to.

But it does illustrate the kind of grip Tesco now have on the petrol retail market: they've put so many traditional petrol stations out of business that they now feel less need to compete on price, and will gladly rip people off in areas where there's no stiff competition. Frightening really - a taste of things to come.

Thanks Carray, thought I'd push them a little further:

    First reply:
Have read your response and it provides me with no reassurance that the policy is implemented or will be adhered to in store. That was the nature of my complaint. The refund I received from store was 27p i.e. the difference and not DOUBLE THE DIFFERENCE. Yet again a deviation from your policy!!
Reassurance is what I am seeking and you have not satisfied me.

Is the Sainsburys now included in this store's price match?
Has a "red Light" been triggered at store level and action taken with regard this matter?

    Your email is therefore unsatisfactory

Tesco Reply (did you get this one??):

    Thank you for your reply.

Further to your enquiry, I am sorry you where unhappy with my reply as no further annoyance was indented.

As advised in the email, we will reduce our price to match just as soon as our next survey is carried out. I did not advise that this would happen straight away, but a copy of your email was sent to the store manager who will in turn address the matter with the staff concerns so they are fully aware of the price policy.

Due to the store not refunding the correct about I am more the happy to forward a Tesco Gift Voucher to cover the cost of the correct refund or I can add the points to your a clubcard account.

If you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact us at customer.service@tesco.co.uk quoting TESXXXXXX

    My lastest offering:

No the main reason that I was disgrumpled with your initial reply was that it contained very little effort. I know for a fact that you just sent me a standard generic letter from your database. This is insulting to the extreme and demonstrates more about how Tesco deals with complaints with customers.

What ever happened to the personal service and commitment to customer satisfaction? Truly shameful!!!

who did you write? to I find a letter to the organ grinder not the monkey generally gets a more intelligent and rewarding response. ie they don't like any hassle. Give it a try if you don't get e good response.

    Thanks for the tip everyone.

I live in Basildon Saff (South) Essex and we are ringed by superstores so great scope.

On a wider point, I really miss "Petrolbusters", not only did it give fuel prices
in concentric rings up to 25 miles of any post code, it was also a good way of getting a map showing the local Tesco.asda/sainsbury/morrison in a town you were driving to - as these were usually it that town's top ten best prices.

(I believe the AA paid 8 million for the site and then closed it down about 3 years later).

Anybody know of another petrol price comparison site ?

    Rgds,

    Mary

    ONE I use is

    www.petrolprices.com.

According to the Petrol Retailers Association, there is no difference between supermarket fuel and the regular fuel from Esso / Shepp / BP. In fact, it all comes from the same refinery.

The only difference is with 'premium' brands like Optimax or BP Ultimate, but then these cost more per litre.

So Shell is no better than Tescos for example?

I always think my old trusty diesel runs better on shell or is it all in the mind, my mind?
