I agree - but these are actually Esso garages. Many people have had the same experience - you are not alone. But it is the same at Safeway/BP garages - these are still BP.

In the case of Tesco Express if Esso have any offers, these will be available at that garage.
  • I'm afraid the leaflet does state that the offer is not valid in Tesco Express stores.

Whilst my local Tesco Express petrol station does have Tesco branding inside the shop, the large sign by the road that shows the price per litre, and the side of the forecourt roof, are branded as Esso.
  • Been filling up at my local Tesco or Esso, whoever is the cheapest, for years. Always got 300 miles, give or take 5, from a full tank. Filled at Shell the other day and went 330miles before the little light came on again! Tried it again and another 330 miles. I know garages are permitted a small error but how much?

Tesco only change their fuel prices at night (between 3am - 5am) because it is quieter then, and means less inconveniance for customers.

You appear to have been misled here....Tesco change their fuel prices at all different times of the day, it depends on when the instruction comes from head office.

  • Thanks for the tip everyone.

I live in Basildon Saff (South) Essex and we are ringed by superstores so great scope.

On a wider point, I really miss "Petrolbusters", not only did it give fuel prices
in concentric rings up to 25 miles of any post code, it was also a good way of getting a map showing the local Tesco.asda/sainsbury/morrison in a town you were driving to - as these were usually it that town's top ten best prices.

(I believe the AA paid 8 million for the site and then closed it down about 3 years later).

Anybody know of another petrol price comparison site ?

    Rgds,

    Mary

Tesco have a free booklet in their stores/petrol stations that has a map of the UK and lists all of their stores in each area. Handy to keep in the car as if I travel around I like to use Tesco petrol for the clubcard points.

That's interesting. The guy in the Motoring Telegraph "Honest John" has long said that the big names- Esso, Shell etc are better for the cars and give better mpg that the supermarket stuff. Something about better lubricants and surfactants.
I am surprised that is it as much as 10% though.

I have put the odd tank of Esso diesel recently - same price as Sainsbury's and the really good road atlas with the permanent speed camera included for £1.99 if you spend £6 (I think)
.However, Sainsbury's started the spend £50 and save 5p per litre deal, so I stopped before everyone that wanted the atlas had one!.

Mary - sometimes Pitsea Tescos is cheaper than either of the two Basildon branches. Also worth comparing Basildon Tesco's against the Jet garage on th A127 (old Esso one) as sometimes it is cheaper.

However Southend Tesco is another penny cheaper if you ever have to head that way.
  • According to the Petrol Retailers Association, there is no difference between supermarket fuel and the regular fuel from Esso / Shepp / BP. In fact, it all comes from the same refinery.

The only difference is with 'premium' brands like Optimax or BP Ultimate, but then these cost more per litre.
