just found out that local tesco disel 97.9 whereas shell within 3 miles is 94.7.
tesco insist that must buy diesel from shell, then take receipt to tesco customer services where they will give me diff = 3.2p/litre and then give me double that = 6.4p/litre. so i then get it from shell effectively for 97.9-9.6=88.3p litre.

tesco wont allow you to buy it from them at this price !!

so they are giving their business away to shell and subsidizing it !!!!

    sorry i'm a bit jumbled with that , i DO get it for 88.3p if get it from shell ie 94.7p - tesco refund ( 3.2p X 2 = 6.4p )
this still gives me a subsidized shell price of 88.3p/litre

but i cannot force tesco to lower their price till they next survey. if i could it would have been triple reduction by buying from tesco at their dropped price.
    ie
apparently they cant just respond to local prices but must get authorisation from HQ

BUT FOLKS - as long as they dont drop their price to shell's, i stand to gain more. all i do is take my fuel receipt when i next do a shop at tesco and get my 6.4p / every litre refund.

NB they keep log of their prices so this should be able to be done retrospectively.
  • I love you style on this one ballonist, it has been truly magnificent. TOP MARKS ! :T :T

An example, to everyone, its no good moaning about things, do something about it !
Drat and Double Drat, curse that Mr T excuse for not giving me a refund.

EVERY LITTLE EXCUSE HELPS in trying to get out of the R&R policy when the law has been broken, especially on high value items. :D

My local Tesco were 2 pence per litre more expensive than Sainsbury's, and I mentioned this to the Tesco staff when I last got petrol. They apologised and gave me a refund of double the difference. (Which in my case was 80 pence), and promised to reduce their price to match Sainsburys.

I checked the Tesco website and found this:

hi i have been a year dealing with tesco great yarmouth about the promise and i have at long last been told by norfolk trading standards who i complained to that the great yarmouth store has on several occassions been higher so the store manager will be told to toe the line.

Well done ballonist :D I'm a shoppers at St.Peter's Worcester and I also feel the same way. Have you noticed that the St Peters store petrol station doesn't have any labels saying they've been checked by trading standards?? Esso London Rd (Tesco Express) does. Perhaps I'll send in a little something... :rotfl: I won't hold my breath for an exclusive response.

I think Tesco's price promise is rapidly becoming a complete farce.

In recent weeks the Tesco at Handforth Dean (near Wilmslow, Cheshire) has consistently been more expensive than three petrol stations within the 3-mile radius. On one day a fortnight ago Tesco was a shocking 3p more than the Sainsburys, Shell and Esso petrol stations within the radius.

I asked the cashier in the Tesco garage if they'd match the other three garages and he refused point blank, and said he was unaware that Tesco had a price promise.

I e-mailed Tesco and got exactly the same generic response as previous posters on this thread, which completely failed to address the questions I'd raised. I replied, asking them to read my questions and give an intelligent human response, and they replied back with exactly the same generic reply they sent me originally! Absolutely pathetic.

Exactly the same has been happening in Macclesfield where the Tesco has been 2p more expensive than the Esso garage (less than a mile away) every day for the past fortnight.

I'd love to know exactly who performs these mystical "price surveys" that Tesco claim to carry out. Someone with a white stick, it seems...

I have just returned from a very nasty experience at the St Peter's store which made me even more determined to complain to them. I've omitted the main complaint but here is the bit I put in the email about the fuel policy:

Furthermore, the petrol station at this store consistently sells fuel at higher prices than other fuel stations within a three-mile radius. They also refuse to admit there is a petrol-pricing policy, as I found detailed on your website. I stopped short of printing your own webpage and handing it to the Manager who is so clearly oblivious to your national policy.

I wonder what the reply will be. <notable sarcasm intended>

When I do get a reply I shall cross-check it with ballonist's reply and I can bed you a quid it will be the same ;)

I recieved the following email from tesco today

    Thank you for your email.

Our fuel price policy is to match the cheapest price in any given area, and
therefore we carry out regular surveys with our competitors. This is undertaken
within a three-mile radius of any store, and within one driven mile of the M25.

It can happen that our competitors change their prices between our surveys. As
soon as we are made aware of this, we verify the details and carry out the price
    amendment.

Should you source a cheaper fuel in your local area, we are happy to refund
double the difference and will reduce our price to match just as soon as our
next survey is carried out. In such a case, we will require your Tesco receipt
in order to process your refund.

I trust this information has reassured you of our commitment to our customers.

    Thank you for your time.

If you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact us at
    customer.service@tesco.co.uk quoting TES*******X.

    Kind Regards

so i presume that if i printout my search from petrol prices showing any other service station less than 3 miles away from them they will sell me the petrol at that price. Has anyone else tried this succesfully.

My confusion continues. It no longer says that they will refund doubdle the difference, it just says they will try to be in line with others.
  • I got the "we try to be the cheapest within 3 miles" flannel yesterday, having filled up (with 5p/litre off voucher) and found Mr Shell down the road 1p/litre cheaper. No refund = boo! Tesco website doesn't have a petrol price policy on any more, but I did find this on the 'customer service - at the CS desk' page: "We monitor petrol prices up to a 3 mile radius to ensure that you will not buy petrol cheaper." Think I'll see what happens next time. All the same £1/litre for diesel = ouch!!
