I would suspect its quite good fun for shop staff to wind people up who get stroppy when asked their age (so probably picked you out for "sport"). In the scale of things you could get upset about, its low priority, try not to react.0

We had a young girl in the other month trying to buy a pack of lighters. She didn't look 18 by any means. I refused to serve her, mentally noting the time and description to put in the refusal book like every good employee should do. I served her mate some chocolate or something, and the girl turned to me and went "Please sell me them, I'm 16, honest." To which I replied "Well you might be 16, but it's 18 to buy smoking related merchandise, which includes lighters." She walked away quite embarrassed."Beautiful young people are accidents of nature, But beautiful old people are works of art."

When at uni I was confronted going into the Disney Store and told I needed to be accompanied by an adult. :rotfl:
I was with my (slightly younger) friend who I pointed out and said 'it's okay, he's with me',, so she then went on about being told by the manager to prevent kids getting in who had been causing havoc in the cuddly toys.

Sympathy for the OP, but I'm with the shop assisstant, not only can they be fined they also risk a criminal record for selling to underage people. Not worth the risk if you ask me!Out of my mind. Back in 5 minutes.0

How can they determine who the booze is for? It's illegal for shops to sell to underage people, but not for them to drink it at home.Toyota - 'Always a better way', avoid buying Toyota.0 -
In this case, if the OP was the one trying to do the shopping, then the cashier would have seen that, and known that the alcohol was part of their shopping. Given the risk that the cashier would have been taking if they had sold it, I think they did the right thing-most supermarkets I go into operate this policy and have signs at the checkouts and in the alcohol aisles to make customers aware that they can be asked for ID. I am asked for ID from time to time, so just make sure I keep my driving licence in my bag. Simple.
And it's Tesco, not tescos! (My own mini vent there!)0 -

think i will shop at asda from now on!
I would have just left all the shopping there and gone elsewhere.
The countrys gone nuts!
So, if I go shopping (I'm 32), with my male cousin, who is 19, they could refuse to serve me with alcohol, because I am with someone who could possibly look younger than 18? Even though NONE of the shopping is for him (lets say I am doing a large shop and he come with me to help me carry the bags)?
