They HAVE to ask for ID if you look underage. It's the same everywhere.
I watched a man trying to buy alcohol for his obviously underaged son. He flipped out (which made it even more obvious what he was trying to do) and walked out empty handed.
What is the big deal in them asking for ID? It's not worth starting a thread over. Complaining because someone is doing their job. :rotfl:0 -

people need to realise the person on the till is doing theyre job, if they didnt do it right they would get a fine, get a criminal and loose theyre job, just accept it if you get asked for id and try and make sure you have your id on youNo Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20 -

Are you sure that if they didn't do it 'right' they would get a fine, a criminal (record?) and lose their job?
I'm still not sure what 'right' is? Why would having a 17 year old with my without ID stop me buying alcohol, when having an eight year old with me doesn't?
How much of this is people making things up? A criminal record for a civil offence?
Years ago, we weren't threatened with stories of fines and criminal records, but of a story of a Sainsbury's store that lost its licence and hence couldn't sell alcohol (I can't recall if the offending till operator lost their job).Toyota - 'Always a better way', avoid buying Toyota.0 -
What the Heck, If I was refused alcohol at Tesco because my 10 yr old Son was with me, I'd simply send my Son to the local corner shop to pick it up on the way home.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

Right, time for me to put my "supermarket policy nerd" hat on.
- Think 21/Challenge 21, asking if a customer is over 21 rather than 18 reduces the possible margin of error, as it requires that more people be possibly asked.
- If there's a breach of licensing laws, it's both the cashier and the store than can be fined, along with the possibility of nastygrams in the local press.
- If you're 21, and you're with a 12 year old kid, and you are heard telling the 12 year old that he can have the Stella you're buying, the shop can and should refuse the sale, as it is illegal to purchase for someone under 18 regardless of relationship.
- If you try and buy drink and are over 18, but get IDed and you don't have any on you, we must refuse (obviously). If someone you are with then produces ID then we must also refuse, as it is obvious the booze is being bought for/by the person without ID.
- If there's a group of people, one or more of whom seem under 21, every member of the group must be IDed. Pain, I know, but still...
- I don't remember everyone that walks through my till and it's unreasonable to expect any cashier to.
- All of the above is at the discretion of the cashier or the supervisor authorising the sale. If you can't produce ID if asked then no matter how much you beg or plead you aren't getting served no matter what. Making a fuss will probably make it less likely.
To the OP: the cashier was right and fully entitled to refuse the sale. Sorry. In future, pick up a CitizenCard or even a provisional driving license for use as a proof of age and keep it on you.0 -
went in there on the weekend and there was a group of boys around 18ish and aloud of girls who you could see were not even 16 and the assistant didnt even ask them for id just because they were mates.
i dont know what the staff must think of me as they now wont even serve me fags so obviously think im under 16 (im there with a 2yr old baby and a 29 yr old partner :rotfl: ) when they refused me i got a few funny looks from the other customers.Wins for 2011: ........................
