I was just making the general suggestion that, as we know the law that the supermarkets have to follow (and get generously fined if they flout it) it would be useful to carry ID for those occasions where we might need it.
that is the thing they wouldnt have been breaking the law my oh showed id saying he was 29 so selling to him wouldnt have got them a fine.Wins for 2011: ........................

I would have thought with your Mensa comment you obviously consider yourself more intelligent than the average person who works in retail.
You'd think then that you might have considered the possibility the 29 is my age!
Don't worry, uktim29, by HC's reckoning I must be 84.
zoelouise88, if you don't actually have any ID, how do the staff know that you are over eighteen? Perhaps they realised that you had never shown ID before, and therefore needed to check?Gone ... or have I?0 -

You can draw any ridiculous inference you wish. Go ahead and leap upon any light-hearted comment and twist it for your own delight.
However this debate is not about the IQ of supermarket workers, but the difficulties they face in complying with the law without irritating their customers.0 -
Back to what the OP was moaning about, I think she is making unnecessary fuss. So what, once she was not able to buy alchohol? I'm sorry, but I feel it just goes to prove that if you look young enough to be asked for ID, then you should always carry ID, whether or not you 'know' the cashier.Watch this space...0

People who look underage should be asked for ID, I have no quibbles with that. But it seems strange that this (overly) cautious approach has suddenly come on
For years I’ve been buying wine with my shopping, and not giving it a second thought (as I’m well and truly old enough, lol) and then suddenly out of the blue just a few months ago I was asked in M & S if I had any ID on me. I was so gobsmacked, I just managed to say, well.. I’m 35 so I didn’t think to bring any:rotfl:
The only ID I have is my passport (I don’t drive), which I don’t like to carry around, but I do bring it with me now, silly though it seems..
[To the OP: think I’d take my custom elsewhere if you have reason to think they’re being difficult with you personally.]0 -

The ridiculous inference is your guess of my age.
I find it strange you say this debate is not about the IQ of supermarket workers, as it was you who brought that up. Why don't you just acknowledge you offended some people (which you clearly have) with your presumptuous comment instead of trying to make excuses.0 -

I hereby apologise if my use of the word 'Mensa' has offended anyone.
I should have said, 'Your ID might be requested if you are clearly 50+, but the checkout operator is still not sure, despite your grey hair and wrinkles, that you are over 18.'0 -
the point in the first place was they refused to sell to my oh even though he showed id saying he was 29 just because he was with me, and dont saying they have to id all people at the till as that is rubbish i rang tescos and they have said as long as the person paying shows id then they can serve them no matter who else they are with.
so looks like i was in the right to moan as she obviously was just being a cow.Wins for 2011: ........................

No they're right - if they think they're indirectly selling to a minor, they're not allowed to finish the sale. Don't ring "tescos" or indeed Tesco customer services, ask to speak to anyone there with a licence and they'll tell you what I just have.0
