I'm not denying that the penny under the pound trick isn't used as marketing ploy, but on such small ammounts (IMHO) that logic doesn't really apply - I (and I'm pretty sure many others) wouldn't look at a product or service priced £1.99 and go "phew / wow - it's LESS than £2!", I'd look at it and think "£2" because as a good moneysaver who likes to keep a rough idea of what I'm spending it's much easier to think in (but more importantly keep track of) round numbers.

my point about the car was owner bing "stupid" was more along the lines of him creating un-neccesary work for himself by not working to a round figure - is the same idea that shows and events use to speed up transactions at refreshment stalls etc. - everything is a multiple of a pound so people don't have to scrat about finding / waiting for change and in the example of refreshments people can buy more quickly thus the queue moves faster and people are more likely to join it, in the car wash example the guy actually spends the time washing cars instead of faffing / argueing about change.

I'd already posted on this thread about this:

Generally it forces the cashier to put the sale through the till to get the change (so they don't just pocket the money). Additionally, there is the marketing aspect, 1.99 being seen as a lot lower than 2, etc.

It takes me about 20-30 minutes to get all the stuff out and wash the car ... I would would therefore consider £2 to be excellent value for money and much cheaper than me wasting my time on it.

Oh dear! Ha Ha! You needs to get organised:rolleyes: It took me exactly 12 mins to do mine yesterday - I know this because 'The Archers' was on Radio 4 and I started and ended with the 'dum de dum de dum de dum' music. (Mind you I still don't do it very often:o

    Quick Update.
Mrs Advent today decided we need a sack of spuds as we were driving to B&Q to get turf (another story)....
The spuds had a nice big hand written sign saying "POTATOES -£4.99 A SACK".
I gave the cheery chappy a £5 note and he loaded the spuds in my boot, then walked off and sat back in his van.
Once again I was a penny short and as he was quite big with hairy knuckles I didn't question him on my change.
Now 2p a week is a pound a year, so if I live to be 78 that is £60 I will lose in my adult life.
Now if so2006 will put £60 in my paypal account then I will be more than grateful and will let them keep my pennies for the remainder of my life.

lol, I went to McDonalds the other day (don't shoot me) and tried to pay with my debit card and the machine wasn't working so they gave me my meal for free :) was just a happy meal but they let me away with £1.99 :)

Well then why in that case am I 31 and so far my loss at these things is 0p. Why is yours going to be £60?

I think so2006 will want you to make slightly more effort in asking for your 1p (and not using he had hairy knuckles as an excuse) or leave the transaction if they have no change before they send you £60!

Bentleys take a little longer than Ford Kas :D

Even at 12 minutes I would consider £2 to be good value .. that is only £10 per hour .. I value my time at much more than that.

I'm honestly trying to work out if you are being serious or not (no smilies)?

A Ford Kas? No I have a Nissan Micra because I like to be environmentally friendly and I consider it's still £1.99 in my pocket to spend on something I want.
