Car Wash - £1.99....or not.

I took the car to the local car wash which advertised "CAR WASH FROM £1.99". I gave the guy £2 which he duly took and then guided me into the rails of the car wash.
I waited for my 1p change and when it never arrived I said to the guy "Can I have my change please?" He looked at me like I had 2 heads and then said he didnt have any pennies.
Now the 1p is not the issue (and to be honest I was just being an !!!). BUT it is advertised in HUGE WRITING - £1.99 not £2.
Next time I go in I am going to count out £1.98 and see if he asks for the penny.
Update next week.. :D

When did the OP mention crying?

I'm with the OP on this - when the tables are turned they don't like you underpaying them.

In a pub recently I thought the barman asked for £4.30 so I counted out exactly £4.30 and handed it over. After I'd gone to sit down he came over and said "excuse me, it was £4.33 not £4.30". I was a bit surprised that he cared enough to come over and ask for 3p, but gave him a 10p as I didn't have anything smaller. He never returned to give me my 7p back! So he was quite happy for me to overpay, but not underpay!

I could be wrong but thee is something in the back of my mind that says the onus is on the customer to provide the right money not the seller to provide change ... although the reality is very different.

I quite like the system used in some American shops, they leave a saucer of 1cent coins by the till and if the total is e.g. $x.98 or $x.99 it is left up to the individual on whether or not they take the change (some do, some don't).

Personally I always ask for shrapnel to be put in the Charity box (assuming one is present).

I dont recall crying at the time, although I may have as it involved money.

Its a penny! Relax, there's worse things going on in the world than you being short changed by 1p!
  • Ooh this annoys me sooo much!

It may only be a penny, but it's my penny!!

    I'm with the OP. It's the principal - if it's £2, they shouldn't advertise it as £1.99. If something is £2.50, I don't give them £2.49.

    He/she can have it.
I have been far too upset, and just thinking about not receiving my 1p change is making me all teary eyed....
I would stay and chat but I cant spend any more time on here - apparently I need to get a life.
Can any of you wise owls explain to this distraught middle aged gentleman how to get a life?
Does it involve football and drinking lots of alcoholic beverages?
Must I go PWOOOOARRRRR LOOK AT THE JUGS ON HER everytime an attractive female passes by?
I need to know as I thought I had a pretty happy life with not a care in the world BUT this penny incident has made me evaluate my meaningless existance.
I hang my head in shame and will now put the kettle on and have a pot noodle whilst watching Judge Judy.
