At the end of the day, it's the principle of the matter! When you break it down to it's bare roots, what has actually happened here is theft - Whether it's the theft of a penny of a million pounds!
I'm totally with OP here!!
No, what actually happend was the cashier didn't have any 1p's. I'm sure the op could have said "ok I don't want it then" and would have got his £2 back. The only sort of person/consumer who would call it theft would be a drama queen desperate to find any way possible to make a mountain out of a mole hill.
I'm not saying not being to be able to give 1p change is right due to not having any but it in no way is theft.0 -

But surely if you advertise "£1.99" you should really be expecting most people to hand over either 2x£1 or 1x£2 coin(s) and therefore have a "float" suitable for such transactions?
Is why shops have tubes of coins that they break open into their tills - because most people will pay to the nearest major coin and not give exact money - they still expect to be offered their change.
IMHO the "stupid" person here is the person that decided to price at £1.99 - why not put it at a round £2 then the majority of people probably wouldn't need change, and those that do will only require notes or £1 coins - speeds up transactions would you believe lol.I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.

A guy down out way started a conveyor car wash business. Within 5 years he sold the business for a million pounds!
If it's advertised @ £1.99 then the price is £1.99 and change should be given. It's an issue of principle, pure ans simple,
As someone else pointed out if you offered to pay £1.98 you'd probably be told to "b*gger off"...0 -

It's because the "stupid" person obviously has knowledge of marketing and knows that £1.99 is in the £1 to £1.99 range therefore lower than £2 which means more people will purchase.
It just goes to show, sometimes stupid isn't actually that stupid. You just have to think about it to understand why the stupid person is infact perhaps the most clever!0 -

Oh and the offer for the pennys to be posted is still open OP! I will post you a couple of pennys, or i will even send you 10p by paypal! it so you can get re-imbursed your 1p so you dont go pennyless! :rotfl:0 -
I'm not denying that the penny under the pound trick isn't used as marketing ploy, but on such small ammounts (IMHO) that logic doesn't really apply - I (and I'm pretty sure many others) wouldn't look at a product or service priced £1.99 and go "phew / wow - it's LESS than £2!", I'd look at it and think "£2" because as a good moneysaver who likes to keep a rough idea of what I'm spending it's much easier to think in (but more importantly keep track of) round numbers.
my point about the car was owner bing "stupid" was more along the lines of him creating un-neccesary work for himself by not working to a round figure - is the same idea that shows and events use to speed up transactions at refreshment stalls etc. - everything is a multiple of a pound so people don't have to scrat about finding / waiting for change and in the example of refreshments people can buy more quickly thus the queue moves faster and people are more likely to join it, in the car wash example the guy actually spends the time washing cars instead of faffing / argueing about change.I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.
