this is why I won't use the ASDA self scan machines if I'm paying cash. First they don't like to take the fivers, then they short change you. Usually a penny, sometimes 5p or 2p depending on what coins they've run out of, but frankly Walmart don't need any extra pennies, I bluddy do.for more info check out www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk . You'll find me there.

I quite like the system used in some American shops, they leave a saucer of 1cent coins by the till and if the total is e.g. $x.98 or $x.99 it is left up to the individual on whether or not they take the change (some do, some don't).
Personally I always ask for shrapnel to be put in the Charity box (assuming one is present).

on a similar thread, I'm sure a business can't refuse payment of ammounts under £2 (I think) when they are given in small change - i.e. for anything under £2 you are allowed to pay in pennies if you so wish...
I could be wrong on ammount but I've heard / read it somewhere.
UPDATE - is actually 20p
Brian Capon, from the British Bankers Association, said Mr Arceri could have refused to accept the coppers.
He said: "If both parties agree to accept payment in that way there is nothing stopping them, but the maximum amount of bronze that shouldn't be refused by a creditor in payment of a debt is actually only 20p. "A person only has to accept that amount... they could turn around and refuse to accept more than 20p in coppers"I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.

At the end of the day, it's the principle of the matter! When you break it down to it's bare roots, what has actually happened here is theft - Whether it's the theft of a penny of a million pounds!
