less 5% commission on the £5 winnings ;)

I thought the 'commission' was earned because of the difference within the spread between the blue and pink boxes?

    Oh my god!
I know you are all going to tell me how thick i am ,but i have never placed a bet in my life.
I have bet on 5 different horses but it says they are matched bets.
I have heard something like this being talked about before, nhave i done something wrong?
I thought i would just pick some names i liked and see what happens, but now i am not sure if i have even placed the bets right.
    I have bet £25 though.
  • How come i only win £5. Wouldnt i be better off @ ladbrokes?

If i bet there i'd get at least £25 profit for my fiver.

Betfair isn't a bookmaker. It is a betting exchange - you are betting against other people who are laying those prices

For those wishing to make an each way bet, you actually need to make two bets.

For the Grand National, you will see there are more than one market. You need to place one bet on the Win market and another on the TBP (To be placed market). This will give you your E/W bet.

    Hope this helps.

Is this in English? (SORRY OP - ME not YOU)

no its not. 5% on your winnings are paid to Betfair (or less if you do more betting). If you lose you pay no commission.

The spread in the market is irrelevant here.

matched bets are good here - at Betfair "matched" means that a layer has taken your bet.

Unmatched bets would be voided at the start of the race if they had not been matched.

The amount of money underneath the odds is the amount of money available to back (blue) or lay (pink) at that price (odds).

I think it's because you've done lay bets (pink column). You should have done the blue column for "normal" ladbrokes type betting. I know it's long, but if you read the thread all should be clear (ish!).

How come i only win £5..

Because, my friend, you have placed a LAY bet. You are now acting as the bookie, rather than the punter.

    Think of it as this:

In a normal bet, you take a big risk and have a small chance to win and if you do win then you win ALOT. If you don't win, you lose only the original amount.

In a LAY bet, you take a small risk and have a large chance to win and if you do win then you win a small amount (the original amount). If you don't win, you lose ALOT.
