Rented House - Law on sound?!?

Thats exactly what I would do.Apologise for annoying her, I would ask her if it has been bothering her before, explain that you didn't have it on excessively loud, maybe even suggest to her that you put a film on come into her house to see how loud it is with a veiw to keeping it to an acceptable level in the future, if it turns out to be the sub causing the problem then maybe you will just have to live without it or maybe re arrange your room a bit.MercilessKiller wrote: »Ok, well may build up the courage to take some flowers round and see how she responds.
Its just ashame that she couldn't come and just ask/talk to me
We've always been very close friendly neighbours and this has never been a problem before.
If it turns out she is being un-reasonable then thats a different matter and how you handle that is a different ball game altogether.
Just out of interest my Grandad and his neighbours are both pretty deaf you should hear the television battles they have, who can turn their tele up the loudest, not that they bother each other though, but it nearly makes your ears bleed when you go round and one of them is watching the box.0 -
Excuse me - I have no 'personal vendetta', I just have the misfortune to have neighbours who put their 'need' to listen to loud music above the need of their neighbours for peace and so perhaps see your neighbours' point of view. I certainly don't need your advice not to threaten my neighbours.
...and you never told them anything, until one day you had enough and went to see them very angry, not listening to them.... ??
this is what happened here - one can go talk to neighbours, ask them 'please can you put the level down it's very noisy at my place'
either you have nice neighbours who will try to do something about it - or they don't care and then you can go crazy at them.
i don;t understand people who just sit there moaning/complaining but don't try to do somethig about it
(not saying this is you case beecher, it's just a general observation of this country
)
I can understand when you leave next to people, into drinking, chavs etc... but otherwise...
anyway, if you think you don't do anything wrong, for the past 12months, you can be quite shaken to be suddenly talked like that.
she has been very hypocritical then everytime she talked to OP all smile and nice talking... that's the bit I don't get!0 -

You and beecher have experienced loud neighbours consistently. You 2 both insulted me. Other people are being constructive. I'm asking for constructive comments not insults.chopperharris wrote: »You have bought a high powered home cinema and/or stereo system
As a present for my birthday I got a PC 5.1 surround sound thing. It's not high powered, it's not amazing or very expensive, but there we go.chopperharris wrote: »....tells me wht you think of neighbours.
Rubbish. Don't stereotype and don't assume. We have a friendly relationship with them and want to continue it so everyone is happy.[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

Thank you. This is my exact point!
12 months and then this happens all at once. Quite shocking really. If there's a problem I'm MORE than happy to help resolve it.[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

subs are usually non directional so it doesn't matter which way it points it can still travel through her walls, I would put the film on with the volume it was at, be honest with yourself here and ask if you can go in her house and listen. If its bad you need to turn it down, but this world is also full of people who think others need to modify their lifestyles because they can't stop poking their nose in others business. my friend once had a neighbour who devoted her life to moaning about everything he did because she had lived there 30 years and he was new, in the end she was warned by both the council and the police to back off.0

Sure.
If the sky box incident hadn't occured I'd believe her easier. She may indeed have heard it in the hallway and now come to complain about it. It was a similar occurance with the sky dish! She doesnt like technology so complained until I moved it. It had no effect on her at all though.
If its genuinally bad which I'll find out soon, then i'm more than happy to solve it. Turning it down won't help as it's already very quiet. It's these "frequencies" that seem to be the problem.[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

ignore the people who've decided to not read your post properly. i kow that if our neighbours have the surround on i can barely hear anything and also same for them with us.
if there was ever a problem then it is always easier to just ask but maybe she was having a bad day and you bore the brunt of it, she might even apologise herself if you go round and let her know that you feel bad that it disturbed them and please if they let you know in future you'll happily turn it down. good luck!Nonny mouse and Proud!!

I spoke to the Landlord. he has an old spare rug which he said he'd happily drop off.
When I explained the situation he laughed and said it's typical from them
When i get the rug and put it in place I'll ask if we can mutually test it with them and agree what's suitable

I agree with the others saying to bring her to your house and vice versa while you have your music/tv on. I previously lived in a downstairs house and could hear everything from above. Luckily they had moved in 3 weeks before and had immediately had problems with who we bought from re noise. We both arranged to switch our music on at a reasonable level and went to each others house. It was unbelievable how loud it sounded - much louder than in our own homes. As we were both in the situation of owning our homes we agreed to lower my ceilings and insulate which worked a treat. I know you can't do this but at least if you show her you need her help to rectify the problem hopefully she will be receptive to helping you. Best of luck.Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0

Unfortunately bass sound travels like crazy. I live in a purpose built block with concrete floors and bass is the only sound you ever hear from anyone; not the movie or TV itself.
I haven't bought a surround sound system while I live here because I would never want to disturb the neighbours. My TV just has the integrated speakers, and I even have the bass on that turned down to -5!
Sub on the floor is the worst thing you can do - if you have to have it then at least put it on a table or stand. At uni I had a guy living above me in halls with a PC sound system, the sub for which was on the floor under his desk. I was constantly running upstairs to ask him to turn the bass down due to the thumping coming through, and when I arrived his music really wasn't what you'd call loud.
From your neighbour's point of view, movie sound is worse than music. With music you have a regular beat which your brain can at least try to tune out. Movies tend to make noise at random intervals so it really is the most infuriating kind of disturbance.
Turning the volume of a movie up because of your OH's hearing shouldn't be a problem at all if the bass is low enough.0
