Rented House - Law on sound?!?

I've been reading this thread with interest and I am on the OP's side. He has been more than reasonable with his neighbour. And a film once a week on a Sunday afternoon - what's wrong with that? ~Sorry, but if his neighbour wants to never hear anything at all from next door, then she shouldn't be living in a flat.
Whilst the OP has tried hard to be conciliatory (sp?) she has not tried at all. She doesn't deserve any flowers or chocolate, in fact she sounds like a miserable old bat!0 -
I think that last bit sums it up, but in trying to keep the peace I try to keep a friendly tone.
You can imagine my reaction when she complained the sky dish made the flats look ugly and I "had no choice" but to move it
Either way, as someone rightly said if it is thumping through on a sunday afternoon and I don't realise it, then maybe something can be done to soften it. I'm not going to spend lots of money but I'll happily try a peaceful and cheap resolution
Anyway will have a better update tomorrow night![FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

The husband having better hearing may explain it. It's not uncommon for hearing aids to unhelpfully amplify certain sounds when they are at levels that make it practical to listen to speach. It's possible that this is why it's bothering her more than him.0

I was going to suggest the same!
Also, if she doesn't wea hearing aids, it is probable it is the higher sounds she no longer hears. This would mean that she would then get the lower frequency sounds only and so a base booming would be much more annoying to her than someone with full hearing.
Having lived next door to someone in the past who would have their music up high, pumping base through the house at 3am every morning, I have now become very sensitive to noise. The boom of a base, even on low, gets me stressed as soon as it starts up now - as does someone playing football and it thumping down on the ground as it has a similar sound and 'feel' to it. I have to remind myself everytime the neighbour puts their music on that it is at a reasonable level and that I have become oversensitive due to past neighbour problems. It may be that something like this has happened to her in the past, too? That may also explain why, if the base is turned very low, she is still getting stressed by it?
How did it go with trying the speakers on the rug?0 -
Thanks guys. I haven't noticed a hearing aid, though I haven't looked adn she does have hair covering her ears... so who knows!
Didn't do anything last night as my company went into liquidation so wasn't in the mood to sort it all out there and then.
Will definitely get on it tonight though before or after the leeds match!

:T
Put your sub on and go listen in her house for yourself, that way you will be in no doubt if it's too loud or simply an over-sensitive ear. (Whole new problem then?!)0 -
I've just read this thread through and i think the OP is doing right thing trying stuff step by step, but hey if ALL that fails why not wait until they are doing some hammering and then put on a favourite track at full volume - that'll show 'em!
I had a neighbour that used to bang on wall everytime my alarm went off more than once, I went to my boyfriends a few weekends later left the alarm set for 4am (it switched off after an hour) they never banged on the wall again. (not saying its right but I enjoyed it :-))0 -
then put on a favourite track at full volume
I wouldn't want to get a complaint from the world!!! :rotfl:
Fingers crossed it will get sorted tonight. Just found out I'll be doing some work at 2am. If she's still being mean..... hehe. Nah I'm too nice.[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

CONCLUSION
Ok had the worst day at work in a year today.. came home, got the thick rub, put it under the sub and going up the wall, turned the sound to a loud volume (louder than usual), got tilly to listen to it.. she agreed it was prob louder than i usually listen to it
We then went back to hers
Couldn't hear a thing! Not a peep. Nothing. Zip.
She was incredibly happy and thankful. Ended in a nice 20 min chat about how loud the upstair neighbours argue, and giggles all round.
Now I concentrate on life!
Thanks guys![FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."
