Slimming World and OS real food dilemma

I am so glad i am not the only one who feels like this!
I have just one back to SW and after the first group i found the emphasis on processed food really depressing, but am determined to lose weight so am going to stick with it but not stay at group but just weigh and go. Nobody in the group i went to seemed particulaly motivated and there was no mention of exercise at all. And i think Muller lights taste a bit spooky!
I love food and wine and always connect lovley homemade, colourful food and a few glasses of wine with dinner with a happy family home..i just have to find a way of doing it on SW without relying on frickin quark and artificial sweetner ( they put that stuff in all the receipes, even bolognaise!!):rotfl:0 -
Glad to see this thread back.
One DOES wonder a bit about all the processed foods on this diet plan. It does work - BUT it aint healthy with all that in and I do sit there sometimes and think "Well - a lot of the people who do this must actually like/normally eat processed food - and thats how they got fat in the first place - so they're deliberately playing to the tastes of these people and blow the rest of us". On my more cynical days - I wonder about all the advocating of processed food for more "commercial" reasons:cool::rolleyes:
Have never quite been able to make up my mind for sure WHY?
Would be glad of some more tips on a way to do Slimming World HEALTHILY..0 -
Morning oh! what a wonderful thread!:T
At the moment I am dithering between WW and SW however I cannot afford to go to classes each week -this isn't a sob story but I prefer OS cooking myself and some of the tips re SW are great!!
There has to be a happy medium between WW (I'm always hungry and feel) and SW??? ( nice portion sizes)
I have got about 7 stones to lose- but have lost all the SW bits re syns etc and there's no class in my area to get me started:rolleyes:
I am sort of adjusting things like Frylite but don't want to use artificial sweetners -hate the stuff!!! There is one bonus- I don't have a problem re drinky's (sorry alcohol) as I'm not allowed any with the medication I take and I'm not allowed to exercise until the weight goes down - what's a girl to do?
I know- I'll put sellotape on the old mouth - any inspirational ideas or suggestions from the OS guru'spleeeeease???
May you fill up the great clutterbucket of life and may all of your leaks be in cheese sauce
Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without:cool:0 -
I have issues with the SW and WW inconsistencies as well....after some research and deciding the mediterranean way is best, here's my plan for the summer.
Vegetables with every meal
lots of pulses, nuts, seeds, fruit, bread, pasta and rice
Fruit is dessert
Yoghurt - in all it's forms
honey rather than sugar
olive oil instead of butter
soft cheese instead of hard (hm if poss) cheddar and parmesan as condiments
glass of wine with evening meal
fish, shellfish and eggs mostly - then poultry - then red meat
baking and sweets on Saturdays/Sundays
I will try and do something active every day and 30 minutes on the bike 3 times a week......
Sounds simple but I'm a beggar for not following through....I'll let you know!Well behaved women rarely make history.0 -

I too abhor diet plans that seem to encourage you to eat rubbish.
However I have come to the conclusion that if I don't keep some sort of record of my eating then I don't lose weight.
I've just discovered (yesterday) this site caloriecount. It is a free calorie counter. You register and answer some questions and it gives you a daily calorie total, and predicts when you will reach your target weight -it set mine at 9 st 3 which I thought was a bit ambitious so I adjusted it to 10 st. It aims to give you a steady weight loss of 1 and a half lbs a week.
Although it is a US based site (it's part of the About.com website) it has UK products on its database as well as basic ingredients.
You can also track your calorie output by logging your exercise.
I really think calorie counting is the simplest, most adaptable way to lose weight. It allows for all tastes-whether you want to eat muller lights and WWs ready meals or whether you want to eat hm wholemeal bread and hm wholemilk yogurt (I do!).
The caloriecount site takes some of the maths work out of totalling cals which is why I like it but I do think you have to work at weight loss. I lost 4 st 20 years ago by keeping detailed calorie accounts (easier when you are cooking for one) but since then I have not only put it all back on again but I have resisted the doing the work. 'I'll just eat healthily' I'd say, or 'I'll just eat less of everything', 'I won't snack', 'I won't bake'. Those things never happened, I need to work at it, I need to do the planning. If I want to enjoy half a bottle of red on weekend nights then I will have to adjust my eating accordingly. The same goes if I want butter on my toast instead of nasty spreads, or wholemilk yogurt instead of watery white stuff.
I've only been using caloriecount for a day and a bit but I'm fired up with 'I can do thisness':j0 -
Only found this thread last night and following it with great interest.
I too dislike the processed products SW suggest. I normally use EV Olive oil and tried Frylight a couple of times. I felt like I was spraying furniture polish in my pan and the purist in me couldn't bring myself to use it any more!!
Like most of us I've dieted successfuly on many occasions over the years and thought and read a lot about different diets and theories. The fact that I've dieted sucessfully on many occasions tells you what happened in between the diets!
My conclusions are that a 'real whole food' approach is the healthiest and best. However what I am trying to come to terms with is the fact that as we get older we need fewer calories. There is a link on MSE somewhere to a website that you input age, sex weight and height and it gives your basal metabolic rate (ie the number of calories your body would need to exist if you simply lay on the bed all day! Add on to that calories for your daily activities and that is the figure to consume to maintain your weight. ) This amounts drops scarily from your fifties onwards, meaning you need to consume significantly less (or become significantly more active) to maintain.
Now healthy eating is great, but unless there is a control on portion size we will still gain weight over time. This is what I'm trying to get my head round as I come from a family of good eaters who never left anything on the plate! This is where I think SW long term falls down, there is the eat as much as you want mentality, which is great, as long as you're on the plan. If you come off the plan, that mentality spells disaster!
I'm trying to base a lot of my meals around veg/ salad and add just small amounts of protein, cut right down on the casual drinking of wine (that is my downfall) and eat very modest amounts of wholemeal bread /cereal and a small amount of fruit (trying to eat more veg than fruit and avoiding fruit juices) Using my mums old glass dessert dishes which are tiny compared the great big bowls we use today!
I can't be hungry however so will always eat when hungry, just trying to eat something small and healthy! I do believe portion control and a healthy diet of real food is the ideal for me to aim for.0 -
Here we are......Basal Metabloic Rate Calculator
