I like to 'wash' my hair everyday, but only use shampoo occasionally. i use hot water and massage as I would with shampoo. I used to have very greasy hair, it was a bit sticky for a few days, but is no longer greasy - and OH's dandruff has gone too.

I use shampoo about once every 3 months - or if I go into a very polluted area. OH hasn't used shampoo at all since November last year.

Both our hair looks better than when we shampooed all the time

how interesting. I don't use soap and have wondered if I could get away with not using shampoo but have never actually tried it. I use styling mousse and a shaping wax, I wonder if just hot water would wash those out. Do you use any hair products that need to be removed when you wash your hair?

LesleyGaye - I would still think you need something as those products will accumulate and maybe make your scalp itchy? I heard that bicarb of soda mixed with water into a paste can be a natural healthy shampoo, which costs very little.

I decided to experiment on my sons work shirts which are white. I soaked them in Tescos cheapie biological powder for 24 hours. I was then able to do them on my 29 minute wash cycle with a little more w. powder. I tipped the soaking water into the drum.

They came out fine. No more hot washes for me. I have also noted that one poster said using a lower spin speed prolongs the life of your machine.

About plolonging the life of your washing machine.... 19 years ago, my paents bought a really cheap washing machine, which they didn't expect to last longr than a couple of years..two weeks ago my step brother took it to the dump! Dad is sure that the reason it has lasted for so long is that they had it filling from the hot pipe, so it never had to heat any water..don't know if this is right or not though.

How interesting! My (newish) machine (cold water fill only) has an option where you can select the spin speed (rpm) and, when fine (ie good dryingweather) is forecast I have been reducing the spin speed and I was wondering if it would make a difference to both electricity consumption and (thinking about wear and tear) machine life!

Valli my machine is only a few months old. When I went to buy it, I noticed there was about only two hot fill machines and these were the more expensive brands, eg. Siemens and possibly AEG (I forget). Anyway mine is a Hoover but one that take a 8kg load. Mine too has varying speed spins, from 600-1600.

I guess the cold fill is the energy efficient way of telling us to wash at lower temperatures as we have to let the machine heat the water?

My machine does a quick 40deg wash but this costs more (elec) than the standard 30deg wash.
