  • The 30minute wash on my machine is only 30deg, so I suppose I've got the best of both worlds.

how interesting. I don't use soap and have wondered if I could get away with not using shampoo but have never actually tried it. I use styling mousse and a shaping wax, I wonder if just hot water would wash those out. Do you use any hair products that need to be removed when you wash your hair?

I don't use any products on my hair. I do sometimes rinse with white vinegar in the water or use bicarb, mixed to a paste, and rubbed in to my scalp. - My hair is now very short. I've always had very fine, flyaway, greasy hair and my main problems are spots on my scalp (menopause, I'm told :o ). Not using shampoo has helped with them too.

Hi all, made my own yoghurt again last night. This time, for the 2nd batch, it was with 4 'starter' tablespoons of my first homemade batch. The first batch was delicious.

However, did everything same as usual, checked it this morning and it didn't work - any ideas? Just all liquidy and I am so dissapointed as was going to have some for breakfast..!

okay going back to ways to save the pennies and ponds

when having a bbq save money by not opening the fridge door - cool your wine in the pond

Or buy it ready chilled - our Lidl sells chilled beers and wines - nice one!

I used to find, as I went on , that I needed more starter. I also used to add dry milk powder (Marvel I think!)

Mind you haven't made any for years!

  • I am a university student and money is often tight so I buy smart price products where possible with the exception of bread and pasta. I buy the shop own brand premium versions of these as smart price bread and pasta is not good. I particularly like smart price crisps, they work out at about 5p a bag, have less than 100 cals and only contain potatoes, veg oil and salt.
I have also invested in a clothes horse which has saved a small fortune in electricity since I now seldom use the dryer. I don't iron as most of my clothes dry relatively crease free. Another way I sayve money is by buying frozen veg, I get frozen peppers, frozen diced onions (which don't make me cry as no chopping involved!), frozen mushrooms and frozen mixed veg bag with carrots, swede ect.
My boyfriend in veggie how ever, soy mince is not too bad because you can get supermarket own brand but as for chicken substitute quorn seem to have the monopoly. Has anybody got any advice on finding cheaper mock chicken and other meat subsititutes?

Drinkuppretty I buy the frozen peppers for my freezer as I have a habit of letting things go stale if I am not in the mood to cook. I noticed in Morrisons the other day a quite large bag of ready chopped garlic for 49p. It seemed to be better value to me than buying the cloves, which again I sometimes find all dried up in the fridge.

I too use the soya mince from sainburys. Last week I made a huge pot of lentil, carrot and mushroom dahl - this lasted me three days! With rice for dinner it made a very nice meal. I eat a lot of spicy, curried type stuff as it is the cheapest way to eat in my opinion. I like to think I am getting back at the manufacturers this way!

PS. Sorry no substitute for the chicken. I have a big jar of the soya pieces (chunks) which look a bit like dog food. Must use them one day!

I went over to frozen because I also have a habit of letting things go bad. I havn't seen frozen garlic at my local morrisons I will have to keep an eye out for it. Lentil carrot and mushroom dahl sounds good, could I get the recipe?

Drinkuppretty - I find the best chicken substute is Asda's own. I think it tastes very realistic, and it's cheaper than Quorn. (bearing in mind that I haven't eaten meat now in 22 years, so maybe I'm not one to judge!)
Redwood foods make "chicken slices". that are nicer than quorn, but no cheaper.

About the washing machines - for my little one's clothes I always put it on an extra long wash - the one for 60 degrees which takes at least two hours in my elderly and temperamental Servis (I will NEVER buy Servis again) but I have the temp at 30 degrees. I do add a dash of Ace bleach but I believe it is the long wash that does the trick. His clothes come out really well, with only a few and occasional traces of the juice, baked beans, tomato, banana, chocolate, milk, orange and quite frankly unknown substances that they went into the washer with. I do not tumble dry.

I would recommend Ace washing bleach as it is really helpful. When I get the courage up to make my own washing powder, I will still be using Ace bleach.

About mushrooms. I have found that if I get two punnets of the value mushrooms with my Sainsbury's order I can peel and chop them and put them in the freezer. They are not good enough really for a quick stir fry, but fine for stews and casseroles and it is a very economical way of buying them. Those two punnets will easily last me the month. Pickled mushrooms are also good in stews.
