On the subject of reusing things would you guys have any ideas for what to do with SMA Milk tins ?
They are the cylindrical containers that the powdered milk comes in and similar in size to a large tub of coffee and they have a plastic lid. I have found uses for the little plastic scoops and my older boy loves to use them in his sandpit too, but I have a lot of the tins left and they are quite a good size so it seems a shame just to throw them out but I just can't think of anything to use them for so I thought I'd ask you guys as you are an imagantive lot !!! :)
My 'baby' will be 25 in a couple of weeks & I've still got some tins from then :D One is my precious 'button box' where any & all spare buttons are kept--I used to love going thru my grans & mum's button boxes altho no idea why :rotfl:
Dried pasta, rice, dried fruit, dried beans...I'm sure I've seen them
[STRIKE]scratched[/STRIKE]distressed with coarse sandpaper & used as decorative plant pot covers & even had holes punched in them with a hammer & nail, to make pretty tea-light holders in the garden.

With the labels peeled off those are the very sorts of containers the Greeks use to grow their geraniums on every available surface. I'd be tempted to cover the tins in that self-adhesive patterned material (now, what is that stuff called? ) and use them for storage of some description as it seems a waste to not use those handy lids.

    Fablon......

  • I would cover them in Fablon too. It comes in lots of good patterns and colours and is available at most diy stores and I have seen it in the bigger Wilkinson. You could coordinate your kitchen/office/bedroom/garage/bathroom storage.

In true primary teacher style, I cover them with wrapping paper or wallpaper - whatever I've got - then finish off with clear sticky-back plastic!

Hi, with the milk tins you could wrap the outside with birthday or Christmas paper and put a gift inside for pressant giving.

My mum kept one for years with the shapes dog biscuits in.
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?

Can anybody enlighten me on the issue of cooking "extra" things on the floor of your oven to use the fuel as economically as possible because I've often done this in the past but we recently had to replace our oven, and the instructions for our new model (a Neff) are specifically not to put any trays or cook anything on the base of the oven.
I'm completely mystified by why this should be and my instincts are to ignore it but before I ruin the oven, can anybody explain whether there's a genuine reason for this? Perhaps I should post my query on the Home thread but thought somebody on here might be able to clarify for me because I find it an irksome restraint.

Lakeland sell an exta shelf that sits on the floor of the oven. this might help.

I have put my kids crayons and pencils in one recently.

Could also be used to store other small toys.

    Hi Primrose

I have a John Lewis oven which says the same. I have tried putting plates/food on the bottom shelf. I dont recommend it. The plates go brown and the food burns!
