julie-d Thank you for this tip about cutting the end of your vacuum dust bag open. So simple yet why didn't I think of it when I was painstakingly holding my bag out over the compost heap trying to hike out all the fluff through the narrow opening with a pair of narrow kitchen tongs. Do the paper clips hold the tide of fluff if the bag gets overfull (as mine often does as I can never remember when to check it) I suppose one could also staple the end over although that might damage the bag when you need to pull the staples out. Great idea anyway. Thanks.

Don't know if this will help as my description may be rubbish but what I do is use a spine which holds papers together. It's plastic and you slide it on to loose A4 papers to make it into a book or for a presentation. I just cut it down to size and then slide it on to the folded over edge of the bag. It means I can use the bag a few times before having to replace the whole thing. You should be able to get the plastic spine from a stationery store or maybe from work if you are lucky!

Gosh how long this thread has become!

Don't spend good money on face masks. Use egg white - brush your face and neck with it. The skin will feel very tight, which is what it's supposed to do. Wash off after 5 minutes.

Also, use a slice of lemon and rub your face, neck etc with it. Leave for 4 minutes then wash off. Do that every day and in 3-4 months fine wrinkles will start to disappear as fruit acids strip the outer dead layer of skin, but far more gently than all those anti-wrinkle creams. And more cheaply too. ;)
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.

It is funny the things you think of that come out in conversation. I said this tip on here after talking to someone who had just paid £12 for new bags and talking about the cost and it all adding up. The bags I had were the paper type and I used paper clips so I could re empty, again and again. This person was quite shocked and said "you did what! I am going to give that a go". As someone said, staples would close the bag in the same way but will not be so quick to undo to empty the bag again.

I was thinking of buying a new lampshade for the lounge. Ours is an uplight shade which I note hides most of the light and shines whats left on the ceiling. I looked in the shops and see the cost would be over £10 so decided to swap some of the shade around I have got instead.
Uplight shade is now in the dining room and landing light is now in lounge. Dining room light is now on the landing.
I'm never having an uplighter...in my dining room the glass shades are side ways on and they are forever getting suicidal flies in. and the shades are so small that I have to create a cyclone with the hoover to suck them out. I once used my 'upstairs' hoover - tiny but boy can it suck - it sucked the glass bulbs out of their sockets - I had a right job changing them!

    The Works are online BTW

  • The reuse of pump bottles was good. I've also seen people resuse them for the same soap, but diluted with at least 25% of water.

I've only just realised that my mum used hoover bags. She always said they were special re-useable ones, and she used the spine style clip described earlier and said it was a special clip.

  • For a fab face mask, use a couple of soluble aspirins from a 16p bottle, mix with a little water to form a paste and spread over your face and neck. Leave for 5-10 minutes and then massage off with water for an extra exfoliating treat. It clears up blemishes a treat.

    It really works :D
