I went to buy a mattress topper as the spare bed is uncomfortable but when I saw how thin they were I thought they didnt look any different than a quilt anyway but cost around £25+ so I bought a new quilt from Asda and used that instead. Hey presto comfy warm bed for less than a tenner.

How do you stop the quilt from bunching up and wandering about under the sheet?
I like this idea but we have trouble keeping the mattress protector in place as it is so I can imagine a quilt would be everywhere except where we wanted it to be.

In the days before it was easy to get mattress toppers, I used to sew inch wide eleastic roughly 6-8" down from the corners of a duvet and hook it over the corner of the mattress. Hope that makes sense!

My mother used big, old fashioned nappy pins to hold hers in place however.
  • I think I've got some of those nappy pins ! Wouldn't have thought of using them !
    Thank you!

  • Love the idea of the nootbook with measurements in - will use that and also love the idea of the mattress topper quilt - going to do that aswell especially in the winter.

I am hunting for some new bedroom curtains for our room - after 20 years a pair of old velvet ones my mum gave us have seen better days!

So in an effort to be organised I am hunting with the dimensions in my bag at all times.......... I will find a suitable replacement before the clocks go back if it kills me!

Keep on eye on your local Freecycle as well, cyclingyorkie .

Okay, I've plucked up the courage to ask a silly question - why do you use a mattress topper  is it just to make the bed more comfy?

No, it's to save you lying on a cold mattress. The mattress is the coldest part of the bed and it sucks the heat from your body. Having something between you and the mattress really helps a lot and makes a big difference.

It makes me feel like a carebear sleeping on a little cloud (plus my Mum gave me it - I never in a milion years would have subscribed to one other wise!):D:j

Aww. That's how I feel when I've been away from home and miss my bed. Couldn't have put it quite so sweetly though.
