Sneaky ways to save the pennies

Could those curtains be cleaned at all, cyclingyorkie? I ask because velvet curtains are lovely and thick. If they are at all redeemable, then if you wash them and remove the heading tape and open them out flat, you can use them "backwards" in the window - ie with the velvet side facing the street - and cover the side facing your room with new fabric. Cheaper than curtains, and as you've got a base, you just literally need to hand sew them over the top and machine new (or indeed the old) heading tape back on. You'd end up with warmer curtains than you could probably get otherwise.
sadly i think they've had it - they are literally falling to pieces! I should point out That I've had them 20 years - they were old when I got them - they could easily be 40 - 50 years old! They are now full of holes.........and I have to find some replacements! I looked in our branch of Boyes...and whilst they had some bargains - they just weren't thick enough..... Will have to keep looking.....:jFlylady and proud of it:j0 -
Hi all.Today I am carrying on going through the cupboards to see what I can use that has been stored away.
I found £5 coins that were given as gifts to my children when they were younger. I am now giving them to the now adults to decide if they would like to keep them or cash them in at the bank.
I have found 2 x small new micro fibre towels I am now going to use in the kitchen.
Saving on pennies I am drinking a glass of apple juice it is 50/50 juice and tap water. I can still taste the flaver but it is just watered down by half.If winter comes, can spring be far behind?

I keep my eye out for dropped coins on the floor wherever I go. I've had nearly £50-worth this year.

£50? , you did do well, I have the habit of looking on the floor when I go out just to see what I am about to walk into. I do find coppers sometimes and once found a £5. I put it on the lottery thinking it would go to charity any way but saddly I did not win anything.
When I find coins around the house I give it back to the person it belonged to like in the washing machine or on floors. If winter comes, can spring be far behind?

Have only worked my way through to page 70 but thought I would put in my 2pence worth before it flies out of my brain again!
When you have small children, at the age where they get invited to birthday parties for most of the children in their class, it helps to have a 'birthday gift box'. I remember my mum doing this when I was little, whenever she saw small toys/gifts etc on offer that my fellow small friends would like for their birthdays she would buy a couple of each. So when it came to going to little johnnys birthday party we would simply pick one gift out of the box. No hunting around the shops paying full price for 20 childrens presents a year!Expecting Baby No 1 - 20/06/14 - Team Yellow!0 -

One thing I have learnt by now - well I hope I might have learnt a few - but this is the one coming to mind now is:
- if someone says that "you are x/y/z (bad quality)" to me - then to not take it at face value. The appropriate response, I find, is to turn round and question myself as to whether there could be a genuine reason for them saying that (ie I really do have that bad quality they have just told me I have) or whether that comment actually is something that applies to THEM.
People often seem to tell OTHER people that they have a bad quality that that person doesnt have in themselves - but the person who said so DOES. "Mirror reflection" stuff IYSWIM.
It is always worth having a quick check of oneself/ask of friends of the trusted and honest variety to see if there really IS something in one's own character that needs amending...because one never knows....
But - I have often found, in my own experience, that the "attacking" comment is very revealing about the person who made it in the first place.
Its a judgement call as to which is the case - but I think one needs to objectively analyse the "evidence" and make a decision accordingly and not take the detractors opinion as "gospel" IYSWIM.0 -
Think that some of that I should take into account with the things my BF threw at me in an arguement yesterday!!. It actually did tell me a lot about him that I had sometimes wondered, but now realise how childish, and moody, he is indeed!!.
There was no comfort from him, when I poured my heart out about problems with the twins, and no consolations about things either. Just I told you so! stuff. !!!
Back on topic, to save the pennies, I managed to get some "free" bones from the butcher van, and I roasted them, then put them in a stock, with carrots and onions from the garden, and left to simmer for the 3 hours. But when I strained them and removed the bones, I just ate all the lovely carrots and onions, for my tea!!! Leaving me the clear stock for later. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0
