Sneaky ways to save the pennies

My OH loves butter, esp lurpak. He always knows when I've sneaked him marg so I'm wondering how hard it would be to buy cheap butter and cram it into an empty lurpak tub :rotfl:
Lol, I'm not surprised! Marg taste nothing like butter, even the *can't believe* type spreads aren't a patch on butter. However, value butter is ok.0 -
At work (a supermarket cafe) I would take home food that was meant to be thrown out that day. We aren't allowed to do this, but if it's going to waste, I don't see harm.
While I understand the principle, please be careful - as your employers could still see this as theft. When I worked at tesco, they sacked 8 members of staff from the cafe as they used to eat the meals that were left over at the end of the day.0 -
Yep, I worked at a store restaurant where they had the same policy, and people did get sacked. Their theory was that staff would over-cater knowing that they would benefit from the leftovers. I can understand the logic but chucking good food away was a crying shame.Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

Thanks for the advice, I realise the risk which is why I have only done it a few times. Plus, as you say, it is kinda theft which doesn't make me feel too good.0

I ended up singing up for the milkman in the end. It sounds daft and expensive but it's saved me a world of cash.
It's 20p more for the 1l Goat's Milk and about 10p a pint more for the 1pt of semi-cow that I take every 3/4 days, but I have saved LOADS more by not going in to Waitrose (the only place on my way home that sold Goat's milk) and picking up a world of Whoopsies. It's sad that I dont get so many Whoopsies anymore, but as I happily do without them, I certainly can't have needed them!
I just pop in there for Whoopised meat every now and again when I fancy a treat or am running low on something. Waitrose are AWESOME for Whoopsies. I think my best ever was 1kg Lean Aberdeen Angus mince for £1.69p. Phwoargh! That made 6 meals!

Hi B
I agree - Waitrose are indeed awesome for reduced to clear goods. Especially good just before or just after bank holidays. We regularly fill our freezer with top quality stuff that is reduced to practically nothing. it pays to know which day and time to go - and pays to have space in the freezer - the butcher/ fish counter sell off fresh items which can often be put straight in the freezer.
Dont be put off by the posh reputation - Waitrose often knock more off the price than the other supermarkets and end up much cheaper in the long run.

When going out for the day, rather than waste money buying takeaways, we carry the camping stove in the boot of the car, and take some hotdog sausages, rolls and ketchup, and maybe some fresh pasta with us (along with the camping kettle and tea and coffee). As we have 4 chldren, it saves us a fortune!! (we do get some funny looks from passers by though while cooking!
i thought i was the only one that done this lol:beer:
one for the kids for saving on a certain well known brand of yogurt buy a large tub of natural yogurt and use jam's on the side or mix together with fruit. my kids love it with all kinds of jams blackcurrant an strawberry are their fav.
if you are sensitive skinned and your hands dry out from using own brand hand wash add some moisturizer (and water to make it last longer) works great for me and everyone asks my secret.:p
a very old trick from my nana was putting your soap for bath/shower in a stocking or leg from tights and hanging is so it only just reaches the water. that way you cant drop the soap and the kids don't leave it in the bath to dissolve in the water:mad:
to reuse hoover bags get some heavy duty tape and before you use the bag for the first time run a length of the tape at the bottom of the bag and carefully slit the middle of the tape through the first layer of the bag(stop about an inch from either side) and then seal the bag with a second length of tape(recommend curling a corner so its easy to remove later).Once the bag is full remove the top bit of tape and you can easily empty the bag and then reseal.
keep up the good advice still reading most post but loving them all:Tslowly going nuts at the world:T0 -
Years ago I got really fed up with having to keep buying new socks because of odd ones and single ones with holes in- so I now only buy black and white ASDA mens socks, always the same style, so I never have an odd one, and I don't have to spend time matching pairs after a wash- plus they are really cheap.
So I thought, that's a good idea - so now I only buy black "men's" socks! That way they're much cosier (for women) and our family socks never need to be sorted into pairs! And Primark sell a pack of five cotton-rich pairs for only £3!0 -
I cut brillos & scouring pads in half, never buy dusters use old t-shirts. Rather than fill the soap dispensers with liquid soap I refill them with budget bubble bath (one 50pence bottle will fill 3)!
I don't like toast or sandwhiches with the end crusts from bread, so freeze the crusts and save them to have with soup.
Pad out all my curries, spag bol & chilli with chopped veg...
Only use the car for going to work - walk everywhere else (well life is tough at the mo)!!0
