So I thought, that's a good idea - so now I only buy black "men's" socks! That way they're much cosier (for women) and our family socks never need to be sorted into pairs!

I tried that, well I once bought 4 dozen pairs of black socks because they were cheap.

Now I have 4 dozen pairs of black socks and can heck find a pair that match!

They have all been washed a different number of times, so they are all different shades of black and all different lengths. To my 49 year old eyes they look the same, until I put them in sunlight then the difference in the shades shows up.

I get to work, put my feet up on my desk and discover one sock is 7 shades lighter than the other and three inches shorter!!!!!!!

Now I only buy socks with patterns on, and only ever buy one pair of any pattern. It saves a heck of a lot of time sorting them.

And if one sock gets lost I can never wear the other one, so I don't end up with one sock that has been worn and washed for a year while the other has been lying under the bed.

Here's a system to keep socks with their partners.

When you take them off your feet, roll the tops over to keep the pair together when you put them in the wash basket. Put all of the 'balled' socks in a washing net before they go in the machine and they should stay in pairs.

Don't stretch the socks too much when you roll them and use a net small enough to stop the bundle of socks moving around too much. Simple!!

Well it is for me, a singleton, you will need to train your family to roll the socks together when they take them off if you wash for others!!

Geordie Joe, I'm glad I'm not the only one who's discovered that problem. My husbands socks are like that too.

Stilernin, that's what I do with my socks when I take them off. Tried to get hubby to do the same but it falls on deaf ears. He also doesn't put them in the wash basket, so I have to hunt around the bedroom (and sometimes other rooms) for socks to wash, and often end up with only a pair or two with the rest being odd ones. He's often had to wear odd socks because that was all I could find to wash! He won't learn though.

Get well soon Kerik. Lots of hot drinks (anything with caffeine in it as it helps0, much better than the cold remedy drinks.

I am a big believer in treating colds OS.

I usually take paracetamol for aches and to bring my temperature down
I always take vitamin C - or some decent multivitamins - to boost my immune system.
Caffeine in drinks - caffeine is an ingredient in some shop bought cold and flu remedies -BUT too much caffeine does affect how you absorb vitamins to moderation is sensible re caffeine intake.

Otherwise - wrap up warm and take plenty of non-alcoholic drinks and eat little and often

If you eat a varied diet and incorporate fruit into it then you dont need " extra Vitamin C" which is excreted from the body. I really dont see the need to take supplements unless you have a very restricted diet. I rarely ( if at all) get colds which may be due to the fact that by 55 I have encountered most lurgies anyway! I do cook from scratch all the time and avoid processed food.

My big money saving tip at the moment is to "see" bin bags everywhere. By that, I mean consider using all sorts of things. I've got a nice Brabantia bin, but would never pay the sky high prices for their bin bags. My main stay is carrier bags, but often, if you buy something electrical or have a piece of flat pack furniture, you'll be amazed how often you can get a bin bag out of the plastic bags these things can be packed in.

My best discovery yet, is when buying a 16 pack of Sainsbury's own label toilet rolls, if I open the pack carefully at one end, I'm left with a large bin bag!
