My best discovery yet, is when buying a 16 pack of Sainsbury's own label toilet rolls, if I open the pack carefully at one end, I'm left with a large bin bag!

Lol, I do that with my loo roll bag. I buy a 9 pack and it turns out that's just the right size for the bathroom bin.
  • This thread is amazing! I'll certainly be looking here again!

I already do quite a few of these things anyway. Here's my list of things I do already:
    *Use cheaper washing powders
*Use loo roll instead of tissues (except for guests of course!)
*Use energy saving lightbulbs - you can get them for free here so I've stocked up on them!
*Use any paper that has been written on but isnt needed and has a blank side as scrap paper (eg for writing phone numbers on or taking notes while on the phone to a business)
*Get free pens from Barclays bank - they hardly ever run out! It was more than 6 months before one ran out!
*Use carrier bags as bin bags
*Use those plastic tubs that sometimes come with take-aways to freeze food in (eg soup, gravy)
*Buy home-brand energy drinks, crisps, sweets, etc (apart from my cola which has to be caffeine free for me because I'm allergic so I buy the proper stuff)

Sainsburys do a own brand Caffine Free Coke. Think its around 83p a bottle which is cheaper than coke/pepsi. You should try that as Sainsbury's cola is also aspartame free.

  • My other half insists boiling 5 cups worth of water when only 2 are needed.I either pour the remaining hot water directly into a bowl for dish/cup washing asap, or into a thermos for use later. When using a pressure cooker,I turn the gas off a couple of minutes from time, the remaining pressure/heat is enough to complete the cooking, I then trickle cold water over the pressure cooker into a bowl to release the heat/pressure.This cooling water is ofter enough to wash the dishes if not left too long to cool.

Lol, I'm not surprised! Marg taste nothing like butter, even the *can't believe* type spreads aren't a patch on butter. However, value butter is ok.

Tesco value butter is great - can't bear marg etc, love butter and can't tell any difference between value butter & branded. Even OH admits this, and he is the King of Branded Products!

Here's a system to keep socks with their partners.

When you take them off your feet, roll the tops over to keep the pair together when you put them in the wash basket. Put all of the 'balled' socks in a washing net before they go in the machine and they should stay in pairs.

Don't stretch the socks too much when you roll them and use a net small enough to stop the bundle of socks moving around too much. Simple!!

Well it is for me, a singleton, you will need to train your family to roll the socks together when they take them off if you wash for others!!

When my children were all at home, I had them trained to pin each pair of socks together before dropping them in the wash basket. I had a mountain of nappy pins back then and they were perfect for the job as they didn't come undone in the wash. Not sure if you can buy them now though

I tried that, well I once bought 4 dozen pairs of black socks because they were cheap.

Now I have 4 dozen pairs of black socks and can heck find a pair that match!

They have all been washed a different number of times, so they are all different shades of black and all different lengths. To my 49 year old eyes they look the same, until I put them in sunlight then the difference in the shades shows up.

I get to work, put my feet up on my desk and discover one sock is 7 shades lighter than the other and three inches shorter!!!!!!!
    ...
Have you heard what Shane Lynch from boyzone does?? (yes random I know!)
He has something like 30 pairs of socks and pants and only washes when he's worn them all (i assume he goes commando on wash day :p) that's how much he hates his pants n socks getting unevenly worn :rotfl:

Really? Cool! The only problem with that is the nearest Sainsbury's is about 30 miles away so I'd have to travel a fair way to get there. I think it might work out cheaper though as the petrol is cheaper there and there's other DIY shops and a general store there which could be useful. I'll have to try and convince everyone in the family that it's worth going there this week to have a look (they're just so picky!)
    Thanks for telling me that!
