My very first post!
I have been hovering in OS loving all the threads and read all 102 pages of this one.
I'm trying to save money and all the tips I've picked up here will come in really handy so thanks to all of you :T.
One of the first changes I'm making is to stop buying expensive cleaning products and to try to be greener. This tip isn't especially green but it is money saving. I get great results cleaning my ktichen sink (inspired by FlyLady) with a paste made from bread soda and bleach on my sink than with the expensive stainless steel polish I used to buy. Because of the overflow I couldn't use FlyLady's suggestion of filling the sink up so I applied the paste all over, left it while I wiped down cooker, surfaces etc and then scrubbed off with a Tesco Value microfibre cloth (great quality and value). Leaves it nice and clean.
Now to find something to occupy me while the board is down!Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Hi Nuala and welcome to MSE! It's very easy to lose a few hours on here reading all sorts of useful posts!
I'm up north in Belfast and would love to know what money saving sites you use down south? Maybe a question for the NI board on here, if I have time later.

Hi - a newbie on this section of the forum - brilliant ideas and slowly working my way through the pages... so apologies if this has been mentioned before...
At work we get provided with a free drinks machine - so instead of paying for a chocolate bar when I get the munchies - will go and get a hot chocolate drink... (doesn't have the same satisfaction as biting into a choccy bar but it is free in this scenario!!!!)0 -
Welcome newbies.
Remember that a lot of cleaning products are cons. My grandmother brought up 8 children on an Irish farm, miles from the nearest shop. She managed without all the stuff now considered necessary.0 -

HI there WBH,
I've spent far too many hours lurking here already but love all the tips.
I think you're better off up North bargain-wise. I headed up to Ikea a couple of weeks ago and spent about 40 minutes stuck in traffic surrounded by Dublin reg cars all headed to Newry for the bargains! Site wise I keep an eye on Askaboutmoney.com (good for info on banking, budgeting, utilities) and boards.ie. Both are great for general info and they have bargain alert sections. But they're not as good as this site for money-saving info in general. This forum has helped me become very thrifty.
I agree with QueenBeruthiel about the cleaning products. I used to be a divil for buying every new cleaner advertised and now I'm using vinegar and bread soda for almost everything. I'm trying to be greener as well as thriftier!
Anyway, I'm sorry I've gone rambling off-topic. Please keep up all the wonderful tips - I'm a reformed character thanks to you all :cheesy:Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!

Years ago I got really fed up with having to keep buying new socks because of odd ones and single ones with holes in- so I now only buy black and white ASDA mens socks, always the same style, so I never have an odd one, and I don't have to spend time matching pairs after a wash- plus they are really cheap.0

I've done this with my boys - dark grey, black & black with coloured toes so I know at a glance which socks belong to which DS0
