oh yes, them's the ones. I've only seen my dad cry with laughter once! :rotfl:
and on a slightly less amusing note, my latest cool find is a website which lets me type in my recipes and it works out the nutritional profile!
Then all I have to do is paste it into my homemade excel calculator which I've programmed with all the RDAs of vits and minerals, and it tells me all the percentages of your daily requirement!
Deep joy :T
Don't worry ceridwen, I hold my head up high! I'm happy to be a little nerdy. It's a character trait I'm quite fond of

Weezl...by all means add the onion...we are fanatical about onions here, they go into everything and a favourite supper is an onion sandwich!
It has been warm here the last week or so, best was at the weekend, but the wind has been stronger to-day, still very pleasant.

Hi candyblue and welcome!
And if DH does notice, perhaps you could show him this below? You are, after all, only trying to keep him healthy!
from wikipedia:
"A study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine confirms that eating high fiber foods, such as lentils, helps prevent heart disease. Almost 10,000 American adults participated in this study and were followed for 19 years. People eating the most fiber, 21 grams per day, had 12% less coronary heart disease (CHD) and 11% less cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared to those eating the least, 5 grams daily. Those eating the most water-soluble dietary fiber fared even better with a 15% reduction in risk of CHD and a 10% risk reduction in CVD.
Lentils' contribution to heart health lies not just in their fiber, but in the significant amounts of folate and magnesium they supply. Folate helps lower levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that is an intermediate product in an important metabolic process called the methylation cycle. When folate and vitamin B6 are present, homocysteine is immediately converted into cysteine or methionine, both of which are benign. When these B vitamins are not available, levels of homocysteine increase in the bloodstream—a bad idea since homocysteine damages artery walls and is considered a serious risk factor for heart disease.
Lentils' magnesium is a calcium channel blocker. When the body has enough magnesium, veins and arteries relax, which lessens resistance and improves the flow of blood, oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. Studies show that a deficiency of magnesium is not only associated with heart attack but that immediately following a heart attack, lack of sufficient magnesium promotes free radical injury to the heart."
Love, Weezl x
I take magnesium supplements, as I find they help with muscle cramp. Your 'stuff' makes fascinating reading, but I find all these reports hard going. I have a fair understanding of all the technical terms etc, but still find it needs a lot of concentration![SIZE=-1]"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Customer: Waiter, Waiter! What's that you've put in front of me?
Waiter: It's bean salad.
Customer: I know it's been salad, but what is it now?

Good food did a tuna bean salad that is really good (you could easily miss out the tuna
) Thought I'd post it in case it gave you any ideas - not sure how it fits into your tight budget though.
Serves 2
It's half a tin of value sweetcorn
A whole tin of value kidney beans
Half a chopped red onion
Chopped red peppers (I use lidl peppers in the jar and add two) you can also substitute sun dried tomatoes.
(small tin of tuna)
Mix it all up. Put a couple handfuls of salad on each plate (we just use spinach leaves as they tend to last longer in the fridge). Dish up bean mix on top of salad leaves.
Drizzle over 2 tblspn olive oil and 2 tblspn lemon juice
Sprinkle with mild chilli powder.working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
Thanks newlywed for a great recipe. Looks super heathy and frugal.
Hiya purpleivy, I think you're right about the technical nature of a lot of these posts. Sometimes I'm not sure what I'm on about either!! And I didn't even know there was a vitamin K when I started this challenge!
Onion and tomato are good iron sources for your DD too.
I guess my hope is that people will feel free to take what they like and leave the rest. As if the thread is a giant buffet table. Some will make a bee-line for the sausage rolls, someone else likes the cheesy pineapple sticks... (Oh Cheese, how I miss you....come back into my life...:o )
Anyhow, I'm totally happy for people to dip in and out as they like.:D
Apparently on radio 4 today, the nettles are nearing the end of their season, has anyone else heard this?! I'll be cramming it in the freezer!
