    Weezl x

    Hi Weezl

Just about to move onto the pate, I've just made the houmous, and am sitting here with garlic breath  . OH is going to have a right old moan when he whiffs it - he doesn't like houmous or garlic breath.

I will be blaming you if I get fat again :rotfl:

    I shall report back shortly.

Mind you I forgt about rising times so will be a hungry bunny by the time its baked!! Still gt to be neaded again & then rise 20 mins & then in the oven she goes! (Or is it he - potato bread sounds more manly me thinks!!)

    Weezl and ISOM

I started off by only putting in 125g of butter which is 1/2 of Weezl's recipe, however, as her pate comes so highly recommended I chickened out (no pun intended) and added the other 1/2 of the slab of butter. So I have made it as per Weezl's original recipe.

It is currently cooling in the fridge and I will report back once I have tried it. I had a huge chilli con carne for tea so it may not be until tomorrow now. But it's looking good!

I bulked out my chilli with lentils and oats, 2kg mince, 200g lentils, 200g oats. Everyone said it was good - not that they knew anything about the lentils or oats. Made 12 meals for 4 in total.

In the vein of the dandelions and nettles I noticed that the elder in my garden has just started to bloom so here comes a shortlived but free ingredient - elderflowers.
They make good fritters - and I've seen them used in recipes with gooseberries. Then there is elderflower cordial and champagne... Will dig out the recipes and post later. (Don't wash elderflowers as it makes them lose their flavour)
On another free food note I have a copy of "Food for free" by Richard Mabey and this says that you can eat Ground Elder leaves like spinach - may give that a go as one of our flower beds is infested with the stuff after OH decided that giving it a hair cut with the strimmer would get rid of it....

    Elderflower recipe number 1...

    Gooseberry and Elderflower Preserve
Trim off as much of the bitter stem as you can.You need four flowerheads for each pound of gooseberries. Top, tail and wash the gooseberries as usual. Put in a pan with one pint of water for every pound of fruit. Simmer for half an hour, mashing the fruit to a pulp as it cooks. Add one pound of sugar for each pound of fruit and stir until dissolved. Bring to the boil. Add the elderflowers wrapped in muslin so they can be removed later and boil until setting point is reached. remove the flowers and pot as usual. Good with icecream.

    Elderflower fritters
Make a thin batter from 4 tbsp flour, one egg and 1 1/2 cups of water. Hold the flowers by the stalk and dip in the batter. strain off the excess and then plunge straight into boiling oil. Deep fry until golden brown. Sprinkle with sugar and trim off the excess stalk before serving.
