BARGAINHUNTER! wrote: »I think its a real shame that the art of baking and cooking seems to be being lost. I have just spent most of today making two loaves of bread from this thread, bagels from this thread, fairy cakes whilst the oven was on (and to use up some eggs) and a salmon pasta bake (from another thread on this site). I had great fun doing it and my son came down to ask what the lovely smell was! My other son brought a friend in who was gobsmacked that I MADE bread! He didn't hesitate to dive into the iced fairy cakes though!! Not many of the mums I know bake or cook anything really - such a shame as its cheaper, healthier and entertaining. Oh yeah - I forgot to add - im a single mum who works and I still manage to fit it in! To be honest - it keeps me busy and out of the shops (but not the food shops!!)
I love baking and my lot love eating it i know cakes arent always healthy but at least if you make it you know whats in it
My youngests dinner lady didn't believe i make all our own bread when he told her!

I know what you mean about the dinner lady! When I made my first loaf of bread from this thread I proudly took my sandwiches into work and showed them to everyone. They all said "it looks just like normal bread". What did they expect it to look like?!! I know exactly what went into it (flour, water, olive oil, bit of salt, yeast) ok - it might not keep as well as shop brought sliced stuff but it is far far healthier! The recipie I use makes two loaves. I have just sliced up one of the loaves and popped it in the freezer, with the aim of only taking the slices out when I need them, so i'll see how that goes. The other loaf is wrapped in a t-towel and will probably all be gone at breakfast time as toast! How does everyone store their homemade bread?
I also had some strange looks when I explained to my friends at work how I made my bagels (you have to boil them before baking!) Now they are convinced that I am mad!! Also made some chicken cornish pasty type things in the week with some of the left over sunday roast - I managed to make 9 pasties from the left overs, and my son gave them an 11/10!!!MFW 2011 challenge - Aim: Overpay £414.26 a month/£5,000 a year. I store mine in the papery bags the flour came in.... And as shaz pointed out, mine get made into sarnies and frozen in huge batches with military precision!

I think if im really going to go with this bread making thing all the time im going to have to make two loaves a day. Im going to see how my sliced frozen loaf fares though. At the moment im only making a couple of loaves a week as a treat and falling back on the shop brought sliced stuff for speed and convenience (such a rush in the mornings to get myself ready for work, make 3 pack ups and get kids up and out and still get to work on time!)MFW 2011 challenge - Aim: Overpay £414.26 a month/£5,000 a year.
