try the British computer society. a friend of mine use to invigilate IT exams. they pay £30/hour but you have to be prepared to take the exam papers with you.

    hi folks

i'm bumping this thread because, having followed the advice on it and applied to my local secondary school..... i've got an interview for exam invigilator tomorrow

I'd love a bit of help from those of you who have been through the process: what sort of thing are they likely to ask me?

It's been years since I worked outside the home, due to looking after the children, and even less since I had a job interview,
    please heeeellllppppp!!!:D

You should be able to get careers advice from https://www.careers-advice.org. they also review your CV and i think can do mock interviews with you face to face

I can't imagine an invigilator interview would be too gruelling. I guess you just need to focus on the kind of skills an invigilator would be expected to have.... ability to follow procedures and rules, good interpersonal and communication skills, good timekeeping, ability to solve problems, attention to detail, experience with children....

    Best of luck :)
  • I went for three interviews for exam invigilating last May and they were all very informal, just a general chat about how the school conducts them, showed me halls/rooms. On one of them let me go with an experienced invigilator and see what she did for about 40 mins (paid me for this as well). You wont have a problem, I was offered all 3 posts and did various hours at each school to get my foot in the door. Good luck!

    thanks for that

is there any special magic phrase i should mention if asked about my awareness of health and safety / and/or special needs provision etc? i am well aware of this as i have two kids and one of them does have sn, however is there a certain way i should phrase it?

(just remembering an occasion when my mum failed at interview for dinner lady and they told her it was because she hadn't demonstrated enough awareness of health and safety:rolleyes:) lol

seriously though - it's been literally years. what should i wear? full-on interview garb (suit and shirt) or more casual? <nervous>

You don't need formal suit - smart casual (ie not jeans) will be fine. Good luck!

  • I don't think you need to go for the suit, think I wore it to one and then wore black trousers and a smart blouse to the others as felt a little overdressed in suit. Be comfy but smart. Perhaps ask if they provide any training, one school gave me a handbook, I know there is also info online which you may want to read before you go as it may help you if you want to ask a few questions about how they handle certain situations. Look at the school league table results/website and perhaps chat about those. If you can be available at short notice I would drop that in as I got a few calls the night before exams asking if I could go and help out as other people could not make it.
